Exactly twenty years ago,Ā  Engineer Michael Mwendwa Ngilu, the husband of veteran politician and former Kitui Governor Charity Kaluki Ngilu, died.

Michael Mwendwa died on June 30, 2006, at the age of 63 while undergoing treatment at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, after a battle with diabetes. At the time of his death, Charity Ngilu was serving as Kenya’s Minister for Health in President Mwai Kibaki’s government.

His body was flown back to Kenya days later, where family, friends, and political leaders gathered to receive it before he was laid to rest at the family home in Mbooni, Makueni District.

Michael’s passing drew national attention, with leaders from across the political divide sending messages of condolence to the bereaved family.

Michael Mwendwa was a professional engineer who lived out of the public spotlight and chose a private life, rarely accompanying his wife to political functions or seeking media attention.

Family Life

MichaelĀ  Mwendwa and Charity Ngilu were married for more than two decades and had three children together. Throughout Charity Ngilu’s rise in national politics, he remained a quiet but steady presence, supporting his family while keeping away from the political limelight.

After his death, Charity Ngilu paid an emotional tribute to her husband, describing him as ā€œa pillar of my life, a caring and loving man.ā€ She said he had been her greatest source of strength and encouragement throughout their marriage and during her political journey.

To mark the anniversary of his passing, they published a memorial tribute celebrating his life as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

ā€œTwenty years have passed since you were called home, yet the years have neither dimmed your memory nor lessened the love we hold for you,ā€ the tribute read.

The family added that although two decades have passed since his death, his values continue to guide them, and his legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren.
