A close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cast doubt on Moses Kuria’s resignation, describing it as a calculated political move aimed at weakening Gachagua’s influence in the Mount Kenya region in the run-up to the 2027 General Election.
In a statement dated Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Gatanga Member of Parliament Edward Muriu alleged that Kuria, the former Senior Economic Advisor to President William Ruto, is being used by the Head of State to launch a new political party in the region.
“Red Alert. Fake Resignation. He is William Ruto’s agent sent out to launch a fake party to split the Mountain votes,” Muriu claimed.

These remarks came shortly after Moses Kuria issued a statement on Tuesday evening announcing his resignation as Senior Economic Advisor to the President. Kuria cited personal interests as the reason for his exit.

“This evening I have met my boss and my friend, President William Ruto. The President has graciously accepted my decision to resign from government. I thank President Ruto for having given me an opportunity to serve as Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry for 11 months, Public Service, Delivery and Performance Management for 9 months, and Senior Economic Advisor for the last 10 months,” read part of his statement.
Mixed Reactions on Kuria’s Resignation
Kuria’s resignation has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans with some dismissing it as a calculated move by President Ruto to split the Mount Kenya vote, while others view it as a genuine step by Kuria to pursue personal ambitions. Others believe it signifies a fallout between Kuria and the President.
Prominent lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi supported Kuria’s decision, saying:
“Moses, you are a good man. You had your strengths and weaknesses, but nobody questions your desire to create an impact. I wish you well in your next project.”

However, George Njoroge, a former ICT lead in Raila Odinga’s campaign, suggested that Kuria’s resignation was not voluntary.
“You don’t ‘graciously’ resign when you’re winning. You only resign when you’ve lost the game, been checkmated, or your usefulness has expired. This ‘pursue personal interests’ talk is code for ‘I’m done serving someone else’s agenda,’” Njoroge said.
Lawyer Miguna Miguna also weighed in, using a satirical analogy to describe Kuria’s resignation, alleging that he has realized that President Ruto’s agenda cannot be sold in the Mount Kenya region.
“Moses Kuria has learnt from Nomcebo Zuma (Jacob Zuma’s 22-year-old daughter), who married Eswatini’s King Mswati and returned home six months later claiming she hadn’t seen or heard from the King.”
