Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi has explained why the body of slain Meru blogger Daniel Muthiani, who was popularly known as Sniper, is still being held in the morgue over a year after his death.
During a Senate session on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, where senators questioned Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen about the circumstances surrounding the death of social media influencer Albert Ojwang, Murungi addressed past cases of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances.
He revealed that Sniper’s body remains in the morgue at Maua Hospital, stating that the community refused to burr him until justice is served to his family, “We will not bury him as the Meru community until we achieve justice for Sniper and his family,” said Murungi.

Additionally, Murungi highlighted the case of Mwenda Mbijiwe, an ex-KDF soldier who went missing on June 12, 2021, while travelling from Nairobi to Meru after conducting a security training session for a church in Nairobi. To date, Mbijiwe has not been found.

At the same time, Murungi called on the Inspector General of police to ensure that those police officers who were involved in the murder of Albert Ojwang.
Daniel Muthiani, known as “Sniper,” was a popular blogger from Meru who tragically died under suspicious circumstances.
He went missing on December 2, 2023, and his body was found weeks later on the banks of the Mutonga River in Tharaka Nithi County.

Sniper was a political activist recognised for his vocal criticism of former Meru Governor, Kawira Mwangaza’s administration.
His critiques, often shared through social media, targeted her leadership and governance, leading to significant attention and controversy.
A post-mortem examination of the blogger’s death revealed that he had been tortured and strangled, with injuries including fractured ribs and marks on his neck.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) alleged that Sniper was lured to his death under the pretence of a meeting with Mwangaza to discuss a truce. Five suspects were arrested, including Mwangaza’s brother, Murangiri Kenneth Guantai, and Vincent Murithi Kirimi (known as Supuu), both of whom were charged with murder in January 2024.
The DCI searched Mwangaza’s residence as a potential crime scene; however, she denied any involvement, claiming the allegations were politically motivated and that the CCTV footage from her home was not requested. She also stated that she had never met Sniper at her residence.
