Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) official was arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) a for demanding Ksh. 400,000 from a Kenyan.
The senior office identified as Daniel Omido, was reportedly demanding the sum to “facilitate” an approval of an online application on the NMS portal.
According to EACC, the application involved testing and issuing certificates to food handlers within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.
“The suspect was arrested at Uchumi House Building after he corruptly received part of the demanded bribe amounting to KES. 200,000,” EACC said in a statement.
Moreover, arrest of the NMS official follows probe after a report was filed with the Commission on September 7.
In the report, the complainant alleged that his company, Quality Plus Laboratory and Consultancy Services, was awarded a two-year food handlers examination contract by the Nairobi City County Government under Nairobi Metropolitan Services from May 2022 to May 2024.
The company was required to test food handlers in hotels and eateries within Dagoretti North, Kasarani and Kamukunji, before issuance of certificates by the county government.

However, it is reported that the application by the handlers is done on the NMS portal, where applicants pay Ksh.250 to the Kenya Revenue Authority.
Furthermore, the approval is also done online by the county staff, who then refer the handlers to the appropriate laboratories for testing.
The suspect is said to have demanded the bribe to be paid on Monday, September 12 to facilitate approval of applications in the portal.
Likewise, the money was recovered from a shopping bag the NMS official was carrying before he was escorted to EACC Integrity Centre Police Station for processing.
