The Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, Lee Kinyanjui, has announced the local assembly of the Isuzu MU-X SUV at Isuzu East Africa.

With the shift taking course, this marks the first production ever outside Thailand and reduces its price by 27% to Ksh 9.9 million through tax incentives under the National Automotive Policy.

“We congratulate Isuzu for putting Kenya on the global map as the first country to manufacture the MU-X model outside Thailand. With local assembly attracting tax incentives, the price of the MU-X will drop by 27 per cent, from KSh 13.5 million to KSh 9.9 million,” said CS Lee Kinyanjui.

This policy shift aims to transition Kenya from a country dominated by the used-vehicle import market, where eight-year-old imports often cost similarly, to a country that embraces local manufacturing, supported by government leasing programs and upcoming Samurai Bonds for component production to further lower costs.

“The Samurai Bond, which will finance local manufacturing of vehicle components, will further reduce vehicle prices,” highlighted the ministry head.

According to Kinyanjui, the government’s leasing programme is encouraging local assembly and parts manufacturing, with vehicles that have higher local content enjoying better tax incentives.

Isuzu MU-X features

The Isuzu MU-X is a rugged, 7-seater body-on-frame vehicle, known for its durability, off-road capability, and family-friendly practicality.

The SUV is built on the D-Max pickup platform and is popular in markets such as Kenya, Australia, Southeast Asia, and South Africa, where diesel torque and towing capability matter.

The version was locally assembled in Kenya and launched on February 2, 2026, at Isuzu East Africa and comes in two main variants:

  1. 9L, which is more fuel-efficient, and is the entry-level
  2. 0L, which boasts higher power and premium features, and is priced at around KSh 9.9 million after the tax incentives.

Engine and Performance Features

The turbodiesel engine is common and is available in a 3.0L 4JJ3-TCX, producing 140-190 PS, depending on the market, and delivering up to 450 Nm of torque for strong low-end pull for towing and hills.

It has a capacity range of 1.9L or 2.2L, available in some markets, that can deliver 120 kW or 400 Nm, and offers better fuel economy for daily use.

The Isuzu MU-X has a 6-speed automatic transmission for smooth shifts, and some recent updates include an 8-speed in select regions.

It has a 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain with switchable modes, Rear Diff Lock, Rough Terrain Command, and modes for mud, sand, and rocky areas.

The SUV has a braked towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg, which is excellent for trailers, boats, or work use.

It is characterised by an 80L fuel tank capacity, ideal for long trips or remote areas in Kenya, and delivers a range of 7.6 to 8.3 L/100 km, depending on variant and conditions.

Interior and Comfort Features

The car can carry up to 7 passengers, with a 2+3+2 layout, reclining 2nd- and 3rd-row seats, and a flexible cargo area.

Its boot space is 311 L with all seats up and up to 2,100 L with the rear rows folded.

A hands-free power tailgate with a kick sensor under the bumper is its key convenience, along with keyless entry and push-button start.

The touchscreen infotainment is 8″ or larger, with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, as well as a dual-zone climate control, and rear A/C vents.

It has leatherette or fabric seats that leave ample legroom and headroom.

Safety and Technology Features

The Isuzu Product has a 5-star ANCAP rating and Multiple airbags, up to 8.

Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert act as advanced driver assistance systems.

Rear-view camera, parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat anchors are also part of the safety features in this vehicle.

Exterior and Practicality

It highlights a modern, tough styling with LED headlights and 17-18″ alloy wheels, with a reinforced underbody protection for off-road durability.

The common roof rails and side steps have a dimension of 4,850 mm long × 1,870 mm wide and a height of 1,815-1,825 mm.
