Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) belonging to the Kenya Kwanza Faction have voiced their strong opposition to the ongoing Gen Z-led protests witnessed across the country.

In a press briefing on July 22, the MCAs expressed their concerns over the country’s recent developments, stating that what began as opposition to the Finance Bill has now escalated into acts of lawlessness and criminality.

The MCAs highlighted that criminals had taken advantage of the ongoing demonstrations to loot, burn property, and engage in other unwelcomed acts of hooliganism.

Additionally, they noted that these actions have resulted in loss of life, injuries, and significant financial losses for businesses and individuals.

“As a result, lives have been lost and many people have been injured. Businesses and individuals have lost billions of shillings through destruction of property, while the country has lost tens of billions of shillings in revenue,” reads the statement in part.

Due to this development, the MCAs called for an immediate end to the violence as well as the unreasonable demands made to the President and the Government.

“We wish to call for an end to the violence being perpetuated and perpetrated under the disguise of peaceful protests.”

“Unreasonable demands on the President and the Government must cease, especially where the demands have neither a constitutional or legal basis,” declared the MCAs.

The MCAs further asserted that no group has a monopoly on violence, warning that they were also equally capable of mobilizing for demonstrations if the situation does not improve.

“No one has the monopoly of violence and supporters of Government can also opt to mobilize and come out into the streets to defend it. This would only lead to escalation of the situation.” said the MCAs.

Kenya Kwanza MCAs Fault Civil Society Groups

Furthermore, the MCAs accused certain elements in politics and the civil society sector of joining the chaos to pursue a nefarious agenda aimed at changing the government through unconstitutional and illegal means.

“It has also become increasingly clear that some elements, especially in the politics and the civil society sector, have joined the chaos to fan a very nefarious and crooked agenda.”

“They have been very loud, clear and categorical that their aim is a change of government through unconstitutional, illegal and forceful means.”

Despite the President’s efforts to engage the youth, dismiss his entire Cabinet, and withdraw the Finance Bill 2024, the MCAs stated that the lawlessness continues to take a toll on innocent Kenyans.

“It is important to point out that the lawlessness that is being deliberately perpetuated has begun taking a toll on innocent Kenyans who have been caught in the crosshairs of the confrontations between unruly mobs and the police.”

The legislators warned that many a majority of Kenyans had resolved that enough was enough and were beginning to take matters into their own hands

They cited the numerous businesspeople located in the affected protest areas, noting that they had started guarding their property, vowing not to allow protesters in their respective towns.

Kenyans Urged to Give Ruto Time to Address the Nation’s Challenges

The MCAs emphasized that the Constitution of Kenya gives a clear mandate to the winner of a presidential election to form a government in conformity with the supreme law and other legislation.

Because of this reason, they urged the public to allow the President to form a Cabinet that will address the challenges facing Kenyans.

They emphasized that Kenya was a democracy and there had no place for criminal and unconstitutional changes of government.

“Should any Kenyan feel, the Government won’t have properly served them, they will give their scorecard in the 2027 General Elections,” they said.
