The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) uses cut-off points and cluster points to determine students’ eligibility for admission to various programs based on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) scores.
This explainer highlights the some of the most frequently asked questions to guide applicants through the placement process and help them avoid common mistakes, including the difference between cut-off points and cluster points.
KUCCPS Cut-Off Points, Cluster Points, and Eligibility
According to KUCCPS, weighted cluster points are a KCSE candidate’s computed performance in four subjects required for a given degree program, compared to that of the best candidates.
Candidates are advised to avoid calculating their cluster points manually and instead log in to the KUCCPS student’s portal, where they are readily computed and provided in your KUCCPS portal.
KUCCPS has the systems to calculate your cluster points through the automated placement system after obtaining KCSE examination performance data. The system uses components, including performance indices (PI) for each student, as provided by KNEC.
The points, KUCCPS adds, are computed to three decimal places to reduce the chances of applicants tying on points.
They are calculated automatically based on a candidate’s KCSE performance in four subjects relevant to the chosen course, using a national performance index provided by KNEC.

On the other hand, cut-off points are the weighted cluster points of the last student placed competitively in each degree program.
After the applications close, KUCCPS ranks all applicants for each program from the highest to the lowest cluster points, explaining why cut-off points change every year depending on competition, available spaces, and overall KCSE performance.
KUCCPS only accepts applications from Kenyan citizens. Non-Kenyan citizens may apply for limited programs, including the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education and the Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education.
KUCCPS Course Application and Revision of Choices
Applicants may choose up to six degree programs and up to four diploma, certificate, or artisan courses.
The course choices are arranged in an order of importance because KUCCPS first considers the highest-ranked option before moving to the next.
KUCCPS is expected to open the application window for the 2025 KCSE candidates in March 2026.
Students will have time to make their first applications pending processing and placement. The standard application fee for first-time applicants is KSh 1,500.
Payment is made through the portal via E-Citizen indicated on the portal, and students receive a transaction code that is also used during the revision of choices. Students are advised to keep the message, as it will be used in case of a course revision.
If a student sends money to the wrong account, KUCCPS allows the funds to be reversed. The applicant must submit a formal request with all the correct transaction details. The process may take several days. As such, students are advised to double-check payment details before sending money.

Student’s Placement Results and Special Cases
Once the application process is complete, KUCCPS processes all entries and releases placement results. Successful applicants can view their placement details on the Student’s Portal and may also receive SMS notifications.
The portal provides additional services, including access to subject requirements, admission letters, and institutional information. Students are expected to download their admission letters and follow instructions from the receiving institutions.
Candidates who sat KCSE in previous years and were not placed may still apply, but they are mainly considered for certificate, diploma, TVET, and open university programs.
Students who completed certificate or diploma courses under government sponsorship should also note that KUCCPS does not automatically upgrade them to higher levels through central placement and may need to apply directly to institutions.
