A tragic incident unfolded in Iravari Village, Mbeere South, Embu County, on the morning of Tuesday, November 12, 2024, when a 26-year-old man allegedly killed his 24-year-old wife.

The community was left in shock and mourning as the suspect reportedly carried out the act in front of their two young children, aged nine and five, who witnessed the horrifying event in disbelief. The village is now gripped by sorrow due to the devastating loss.

Media reports have identified the suspect as Genesia Fundi. Furthermore, the reports revealed that the said suspect had fostered a good relationship with the community while he was carrying out his Múgúka business.

However, it is reported that last month he developed a mental health issue for which he received treatment and has been resting at home since then without engaging himself in any work.

Hearing cries of distress coming from the suspect’s compound, neighbours were aroused and rushed to the scene, where they witnessed Fundi chasing his wife with a Panga. Unfortunately, before they could come to her rescue Fundi had already injured the wife, Gladys Thara.

“We were woken by cries of distress and noise from Fundi’s compound as he chased his farmer while wielding a panga,” Magara said.

At the same time, the suspect’s brother Stephen Nyaga criticized the police for not taking action to prevent such an incident from occurring despite reporting his criminal behavior on several occasions.

“We had reported the matter to the police station about my brother’s recent behaviours, however, the police did not take any action,” Nyaga remarked.

Reactions by Social Media on the Man

The sad act has drawn a torrent of reactions from varied social media users who have cursed the incident. Victor Kuloba one of the social media users commented on the Citizen TV post on the killing saying, ” Sad! The man needs to see no more light. After making someone’s child a mom at 15 by 19 she’s mothering two kids and as if it’s not enough he ends her young life.”

Similarly, Samuel Wekesa another X user remarked, “Extremely sad news. Whenever you have disagreements with your wife or husband, kindly use peaceful ways to resolve your disagreements.”

Moreover, several users also attributed the sad action as depression related. “Weh! We need more couple therapists. Mental health in marriage is important,” İnż. Ndolo said.

On the other hand, another X user who identifies himself as TheDemocrat attributes the incident to their age stating that being married at 26 and 24 is too early equating them to children. Further, he noted that men should marry at least at 30 and if possible, a wife at 26 to avoid such cold killings.

While most of the comments lingered around their age and the manifestation of sympathy, others advised that in any case disagreements occur in a family the couples should separate and figure out how to raise the kids collaboratively.
