Kenya has experienced a series of aviation accidents over the past decades that have claimed the lives of senior public figures, military leaders, and politicians.

These crashes have involved helicopters and light aircraft and have occurred during official travel and ceremonial duties.

The latest helicopter crash that claimed the life of Johana Ng’eno on February 28 and the 2024 crash that claimed the life of Francis Ogolla, then Chief of Defence Forces, have raised concerns about aviation safety in the country.

CDF General Francis Omondi Ogolla

April 18, 2024, Kenya suffered a devastating loss when the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces (CDF), General Francis Omondi Ogolla, was killed in a military helicopter crash in Sindar, Elgeyo‑Marakwet County.

The Bell UH‑1H Huey II helicopter, operated by the Kenya Air Force, crashed shortly after takeoff, killing Ogolla and nine other military personnel.

CDF was involved in a chopper accident while on a tour in West Pokot County on

Preliminary reports indicated that the chopper crashed in the area of West Pokot County while preparing to take off with 12 people on board.

CDF Francis Ogolla took command of the military in early May 2023, following the retirement of former General Robert Kibochi after 44 years of military service.

Investigations later concluded that the crash was caused by an engine malfunction that led to loss of power and control soon after departure.

George Saitoti and Joshua Orwa Ojode

Kenyan Internal Security Minister George Saitoti was killed in a helicopter crash on June 10, 2012, when a Kenya Police helicopter crashed inside Ngong Forest.

Saitoti and his deputy, Joshua Orwa Ojode, died after the Eurocopter AS350 burst into flames while airborne, killing six people, including bodyguards and pilots.

Saitoti died on his way to a fundraising event in Homa Bay County on a Sunday morning.

The cabinet had announced plans to run for the presidential seat in the 2013 general elections.

MP Johana Ng’eno

Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno Kipyegon died on February 28 following a fatal plane crash.

A plane carrying six people crashed and burst into flames in the Chepkiep area of Mosop Constituency, Nandi County.

The aircraft reportedly attempted an emergency landing before it caught fire shortly after touching down.

According to flight‑tracking data, the Airbus Helicopter H125, registration 5Y‑DSB, departed Nairobi at 11:02 AM on February 28, 2026. Records also indicate that the same aircraft took off on an earlier flight on February 22 at 1:32 PM.

Captain Mario Magonga

In Central Island National Park, Lake Turkana, a helicopter carrying Captain Mario Magonga, a high-profile pilot known for flying prominent leaders, including President William Ruto, crashed on March 3, 2019.

Alongside Magonga, four American tourists were also killed, bringing the total fatalities to five.

Magonga, who had a background with the Kenya Defence Forces and substantial helicopter experience, had been flying tourists from Lobolo Camp when the aircraft went down during takeoff.

The cause was attributed in some reports to visibility issues and pilot challenges in a remote area, though official probes yielded varying findings.

Kipkalya Kones and Lorna Laboso

On June 10, 2008, Roads Minister Kipkalya Kones and Assistant Minister Lorna Laboso died when the Cessna 210 light aircraft they were travelling in crashed near Kajong’a market in Narok District.

The plane was heading to Kericho to support election logistics when it crashed into a building, killing all four on board: the two ministers, the pilot, and a security guard.

Busia Airstrip Crash

In 2003, a plane crashed at Busia Airstrip, heading to the homecoming ceremony of then Minister Moody Awori, killing prominent Kenyans.

The crash happened a few weeks after the victory of the Narc coalition and the appointment of the Cabinet by the late President Mwai Kibaki.

The plane struck an electric power line during takeoff, killing Labor Minister Ahmad Mohammed Khalif.

Survivors included notable politicians such as Chief Justice Martha Koome, Tourism Minister Raphael Tuju, Water Minister Martha Karua, and Linah Kilimo.

Ngong Hills Explosion

In 1978, Bruce Mackenzie, the only European member of President Jomo Kenyatta’s cabinet and Minister for Agriculture, died when his plane exploded mid-air over Ngong Hills, Nairobi.

Investigations later revealed that a bomb had been planted on the aircraft, making the crash one of Kenya’s earliest politically significant aviation tragedies.

Marsabit National Park Crash

In 2006, six MPs died when a plane crashed on a hill and burst into flames near Marsabit National Park.

Kenyans who died included Horr North MP, Bonaya Godana, Saku MP Abdi Sasura, Moyale MP Guracha Galgallo, Laisamis MP, and Assistant Minister of Regional Development Titus Ngoyoni, member of the East African Parliament Lt-General Abdullahi Adan, MP Mirugi Kariuki, who was assistant minister for Internal Security, and Bishop William Waqo.

The cause of the crash was attributed to heavy fog in the region as the plane approached the airstrip.
