Some Regions to Receive Rain Over the Weekend Amid Sunny Conditions Nationwide

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released its five-day weather forecast for January 16 to January 20, 2026. According to the forecast report, sunny and dry conditions will prevail across most of Kenya. However, certain areas, including the Highlands and Lake Victoria Basin, are expected to experience light, localized rainfall.

Kenya Met also stated that strong winds exceeding 25 knots are anticipated across the coastal and northern regions, which may affect local activities and maritime operations. Temperature variations will be significant, with highs reaching 38°C in northwestern counties and lows dropping to 7°C in the highlands.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, sunny intervals are expected during the day on Friday, followed by partly cloudy conditions at night. This area covers Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi counties.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, it will start cloudy but break into sunny intervals, followed by afternoon showers over a few areas and partly cloudy nights.

The weatherman said that Monday will have a cloudy morning, turning to sunny intervals, with a chance of showers in the afternoon, and partly cloudy night conditions, while sunny intervals throughout the day and partly cloudy nights are expected on Tuesday.

Maximum temperatures in this region are forecast at 29°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to reach 7°C.

In the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, which include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot counties, the forecast indicates sunny intervals during the mornings and afternoons, followed by partly cloudy conditions at night on Friday, January 16.

Mornings will remain sunny on Saturday, but a few areas are expected to experience afternoon showers, with a chance of showers at night.

Sunday will feature sunny intervals in the morning, followed by afternoon showers and a nighttime chance of showers in certain areas, while sunny intervals during the morning, afternoon showers over some regions, and partly cloudy conditions at night are expected on Monday.

Kenya Met said that the region will see sunny intervals during the day on Tuesday, followed by partly cloudy nights. Temperatures in this region are expected to range from 7 °C to 31 °C throughout the period.

South-Eastern Lowlands

The weatherman also predicted that the South-Eastern Lowlands are set to experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night on Friday.

This area covers Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties, as well as the inland parts of Tana River County. Sunny intervals are expected in the morning on Saturday, followed by a chance of showers in the afternoon and night.

Sunday is forecast have sunny intervals in the morning, a chance of afternoon showers, and partly cloudy night conditions.

Kenya Met stated that sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights are expected on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures in this region will remain stable at a maximum of 32°C and a minimum of 14°C.

Along the coastline, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, as well as coastal parts of Tana River County, weather conditions are expected to remain uniform throughout the five-day period.

Sunny intervals are forecast during the mornings and afternoons, while nights will remain partly cloudy. Temperatures in the coastal region are expected to reach a maximum of 34°C and a minimum of 23°C, with the warmest nights recorded in the country.

Northern Kenya

At the same time, the forecast shows that the North-Western region, covering Turkana and Samburu counties, is set to experience entirely sunny conditions during the day on Friday, with partly cloudy nights.

From Saturday to Tuesday, mornings and afternoons are expected to have sunny intervals, while nights will be partly cloudy. This region will experience the hottest conditions in the country during this period, with temperatures ranging from 17 °C to 38 °C.

According to the forecast, the North-Eastern region, covering Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo, will experience sunny intervals during the day on Friday and partly cloudy nights. Sunny intervals are expected in the morning on Sunday, followed by a chance of showers in the afternoon and at night.

From Monday to Tuesday, the region will experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy conditions at night. Maximum temperatures are forecast at 38°C, with minimum temperatures reaching 16°C.
