Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama is a prominent Kenyan constitutional lawyer and the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK). The legal fraternity elected Kanjama on February 19, 2026 to succeed the outgoing President, Faith Odhiambo. In the hotly contested race, Kanjama floored the outgoing vice President Mwaura Kabata and Peter Wanyama.
With over 20 years of experience, Kanjama is a leading litigator specializing in dispute resolution, legal reforms, and public law, and is also a certified arbitrator and mediator.
He is a former chairman of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Nairobi Branch.
Early Life and Educational Background
Kanjama grew up in an environment that valued education and professional rigor, a background that saw him become one of the youngest advocates in Kenya to be conferred the rank of Senior Counsel.
He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (Second Class Upper Division honours) from the University of Nairobi in 2001.
Following his undergraduate degree, he obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law in 2002 and was admitted to the Bar in June 2003.
Simultaneously with his law degree, Kanjama completed his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) qualifications through KASNEB between 1998 and 2001.
The constitutional lawyer holds a Higher Diploma (IMIS) from Strathmore College, which he completed in 1998.
Kanjama also qualified as a Certified Public Secretary (CPS) via KASNEB between 2004 and 2005.
Charles is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), having obtained a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration in London.
Charles Kanjama’s Career Background
Charles Kanjama’s career is defined by a rapid ascent from a young associate to a Senior Counsel and a leader in Kenya’s legal sector.
In 2006, he co-founded Muma & Kanjama Advocates, where he has served as the firm’s Managing Partner and as head of the Dispute Resolution Department, with a focus on commercial litigation, constitutional law, and tax law.
He made history as the inaugural elected Chairman of the LSK Nairobi Branch, serving between 2016 and 2020, where he was credited with operationalising the branch after the decentralisation of the Law Society.
In 2022, he was formally admitted to the Senior Counsel Bar, a prestigious rank reserved for the most distinguished advocates in Kenya, and currently serves as the Secretary of this elite bar.
Kanjama previously served as an Assistant Lecturer at Strathmore University, teaching Criminal Law and Legal Systems.
Leveraging his CPA (K) and CPS (K) qualifications, he serves as a consultant in corporate governance and public-sector reforms.

Achievements
He established the LSK’s Nairobi branch operations from scratch, representing over 75% of Kenya’s practicing lawyers.
The former chairman successfully championed financial support for LSK branches, significantly increasing their annual grants, and founded the Nairobi Legal Awards to recognize professional excellence.
He is one of the few Kenyan professionals qualified as an Advocate, Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and Certified Public Secretary (CPS).
The lawyer was part of the legal team that successfully represented the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in the landmark case regarding the retirement age of Deputy Chief Justice Kalpana Rawal.
He has successfully represented various political parties in determining funding thresholds and handled numerous high-profile election petitions for Members of Parliament and MCAs.
