National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has issued a fresh directive to Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding their security following the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were in Nairobi.

Speaking during the late MP’s requiem mass at the Consolata Shrine in Nairobi on Wednesday, May 7, Wetang’ula directed lawmakers to submit their security details for vetting by the House.

At the same time, the Speaker urged investigative agencies to thoroughly review all CCTV footage that captured the slain MP’s activities in Parliament on the day he was killed.

“We encourage the Police not to narrow their investigations to matters around the City Mortuary. I have instructed the Clerk of Parliament to put together all our CCTV footage in Parliament on the activities and movements around Honourable Were from the time he arrived at the gym at 6 am to the time he left Parliament at 7 pm in the evening. I can assure you members, that the material will be able to help substantially in assisting the Police in what they are looking for,” said Wetang’ula.

“We have also said that going forward, I want to encourage each one of you (Members of Parliament) to submit your security details for vetting for us to get to know what kind of security you have. Kikulacho ki nguoni mwako. [The enemy lies within] We will be able to assist in doing so.”

In addition, the Speaker tasked Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna with ensuring all CCTV installations across the city are fully operational 24 hours a day, “to help capture wicked characters who go around the city molesting others and causing pain and suffering to innocent families.”

On Tuesday, Wetang’ula urged MPs to beef up their personal security and remain vigilant over possible dangers in light of the murder of their colleague.

While speaking after visiting the family of the late MP, he cautioned of potential dangers facing the members, saying that “most of their electorates did not like them’.

According to the Speaker, the tragic murder of Were can happen to anyone in the country, and therefore, the lawmakers should be on the lookout for security breaches and threats.

“Our friend has died in very tragic circumstances; in the hands of criminals because everybody who can pull a trigger to another is nothing but a criminal. I encourage you, members; what has happened to Were can happen to any one of you, so tighten your security, the contingent of your security, don’t fear to live, don’t live in fear but be very careful as you go around,” he advised.

DCI update

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed the names of suspects who were involved in the tragic shooting of Charles Ong’ondo.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Directorate identified the suspects as Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, also known as Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Munyasi.

DCI further said that upon their arrest, the suspects led the investigators to Edwin Odhiambo’s house, where two pistols, a Retay Falcon and a Sarsilmaz, were recovered. Additionally, nine rounds of 9 mm calibre ammunition were found.

“A bag and footwear matching the description of those worn by one of the suspects at the scene of the incident were also recovered,” part of the statement read.

Further, DCI stated that all recovered items have been submitted for forensic examination.
