In a move to commemorate the legacy of the late Governor Joyce Laboso Abonyo, the Bomet County government has announced the upcoming commissioning of the state-of-the-art Dr. Joyce Laboso Mother and Child Wellness Centre.
This facility is dedicated to honoring the second Governor of Bomet County, who passed away five years ago.

Governor Hillary Barchok shared a heartfelt message on 5th memorial anniversary notice, expressing deep gratitude for Dr. Laboso’s impactful leadership and unwavering dedication to the people of Bomet.
“On behalf of the County Government of Bomet and myself, I extend my heartfelt appreciation for your remarkable and selfless leadership. Your visionary approach continues to inspire and ignite the ambition of many, especially young women, to pursue leadership roles,” said Barchok.

Achievements of Late Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso
Dr. Laboso’s career was marked by numerous groundbreaking achievements. She served as the Member of Parliament for Sotik Constituency before becoming Kenya’s first female Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly.
Her dedication to the role of one of the pioneering women governors in the country further cemented her legacy in politics and national leadership.

The late Governor succumbed to cancer at the Nairobi Hospital on 29 July 2019.
The Dr. Joyce Laboso Mother and Child Wellness Centre will stand as testament to her commitment to improving the lives of the people of Bomet.
Governor Barchok highlighted that Dr. Laboso’s legacy lives on through the numerous development projects she spearheaded across Sotik and Bomet County.
“In your honor, the state-of-the-art Dr. Joyce Laboso Mother and Child Wellness Centre will soon be commissioned, a symbol of your lasting impact. May you continue to rest in eternal peace, knowing that your legacy lives on through the lives you’ve touched and the progress you’ve inspired,” Barchok further added.

The memorial notice also featured a touching tribute from Dr. Laboso’s family. Her children, Edwin, Bryan, Ted, Mina, and Marco shared their reflections on their mother’s enduring influence.
“It has been five years since you left us, yet your presence remains deeply etched in our hearts and in our lives,” the Abonyo family said in a statement.

“You were a beacon of love, kindness, and strength. Your unwavering support and boundless compassion touched the lives of everyone you met. You were not just a loving mother, but a devoted wife, a leader, a guiding light, and an inspiration to many,” the statement further read.
Profile of Laboso
She was born on November 25, 1960, and went to Molo Primary Schools for her primary education before joining Kenya High School, Nairobi, for her Secondary and A-level education.
Dr. Laboso then joined Kenyatta University where she pursued a Bachelor of Education degree from 1980 – 1983.
The following year she began her career as a teacher at the Kipsigis Girls’ High School teaching French before transitioning to an Assistant lecturer at Egerton University in 1990 and later to full-time basis; a job she would maintain up to 2000.
In 2013, Laboso became the first female Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly where she held the position until 2017 when she sought the Bomet Governor’s seat.
