Member of Parliament for Saboti Constituency, Caleb Amisi, has formally declined the recent salary increase offered to Members of Parliament and has proposed redirection to Bursary Program.
In a letter addressed to the Clerk of the National Assembly on July 3, Amisi proposed that the funds from the salary increment be redirected to a bursary program aimed at supporting financially disadvantaged students within his constituency.
Amisi, who also serves as the Vice Chair of the Public Investments Committee on Social Services, Administration, and Agriculture, emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility and solidarity with constituents during the current economic challenges.
“Given the current economic climate and the high cost of living experienced by many in our country, I believe it is prudent for us, as elected representatives, to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and solidarity with our constituents,” he wrote.
Redirection to Bursary Program
According to Amisi, the proposed bursary program would provide educational support to students in need, aiming to contribute to the development and empowerment of future leaders.

“By reallocating these funds, we can directly contribute to the development and empowerment of our future leaders, thereby investing in the long-term prosperity of our nation,” Amisi further stated.
Highlighting his commitment to education, Amisi underscored the necessity of supporting educational initiatives, especially during challenging times when many families are struggling.
“It is my firm belief that supporting educational initiatives is paramount, especially during these challenging times when many families are struggling to make ends meet,” he added.

Several Members of Parliament (MPs) have rejected the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s (SRC) proposal to increase salaries for state officials.
New salaries for MPs and Senators will be Ksh739,600 from the past Ksh725,502 if the structure in the notice is sustained. Leaders of the Majority and Minority in both houses will also benefit from an increment of Ksh15,251 earning 800,019 from Ksh784,768.
Parliamentary committees are also set to receive a revised sitting allowance of Sh7,500 per sitting, along with a Sh35 million mortgage allowance, Ksh356,525 for vehicle maintenance, and Ksh15,000 for airtime. The move has, however, been met with opposition from some members of the public and legislators who have since vowed to reject it.
