How the World Cup Came About
The World Cup began as an idea. A French Football Administrator, Jules Rimet, played football for many years before retiring. His passion for sport and vision of uniting the world through football led him to become a football administrator. He dreamt of an independent stage where professional footballers who were not allowed to play at the Olympics could come together to play. This became his vision, and he pushed it until 1930, when the idea of the World Cup was realized, and the first World Cup was played in Uruguay, with only 13 nations taking part.

Brazil- 5
Brazil has proven to be the powerhouse at the world’s biggest football stage. The South American nation has lifted the World Cup for a record 5 times in the years 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002.
Brazil has over the years produced great football icons like Pele, record 3 times world cup winner, Ronaldo Nazario, a two-time winner, and stars like Ronaldinho, Garrincha, and Neymar.
However, Brazil risks losing this status, as Germany is just one win away from tying the record and is coming in strong in the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup in June.
In 2014, Brazil came close to winning the World Cup as then-starboy Neymar do Santos inspired his team through the Group stages. But his injury left a gap in the Brazilian squad that was playing at home.

Germany, on the other hand, has built a reputation for discipline, consistency, and efficiency, playing in a record 8 finals and producing the highest-scoring player in World Cup history, Miroslav Klose. He scored 16 World Cup goals in the World Cup over four tournaments in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014.
Germany has won the title in the years 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014.
They thrashed Brazil 7-1 in the 2014 semi-finals, which remains the most memorable result in World Cup history. In the final, Germany laboured through extra time to beat the Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina 1-0 through a Mario Gotze goal.

Argentina is an iconic team on the world’s greatest stage, having won the World Cup three times in 1978, 1986 and 2022.
But beyond winning the tournament, Argentina has also produced some of the world’s biggest football icons.
Football legend Diego Maradona, who inspired Argentina’s 1986 victory that included the famous “Hand of God,” came from this great footballing nation.
Messi also cemented his legacy after several attempts, leading Argentina to glory at the 2022 World Cup. His emotional celebration remains one of the iconic images of world football.
France and Uruguay- 2
France and Uruguay have each won 2 trophies, leaving a major mark on World Cup history.
France won titles in 1998, inspired by Zinedine Zidane, and 2018, powered by the young Kylian Mbappé.
France lifted their first trophy on their home soil, where Zidane’s magic was unmatched. It is debated that, were it not for his shocking headbutt in the 2006, France would have bagged their 3rd trophy.
Uruguay will always have a special place in football history as both the first host and first champion of the World Cup in 1930. They also lifted it in 1950.

England and Spain have one World Cup each.
Spain lifted the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, all thanks to Andrés Iniesta’s extra-time goal. It was emotional for Spain as they lost their opening match but recovered to win every match that followed by a 1-goal margin.
England also won the 1966 World Cup on their home soil at Wembley Stadium in London. They defeated West Germany 4-2 after extra time.
The United States, Canada, and Mexico will jointly host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the first ever to be hosted by 3 different nations, even as the Ebola virus threatens to disrupt travel plans and fan participation numbers.
It will also be historic, as it will feature 48 teams, up from 32 in the previous edition, with over 104 matches expected.
The number of African teams taking part in the 2026 edition is 10, from the previous 5, and millions of fans are excited and waiting for the beginning of a new era of football, as this is expected to be the last era of Messi and Ronaldo, who have dominated football for over two decades now.
