Kenyan content creators are set to gain access to new digital monetization opportunities following a partnership between WAPI Group and Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) arm.

ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has announced the development after the signing of the partnership in Beijing, describing it as a major step towards connecting Kenyan and African creators with global audiences and digital markets.

“Today in Beijing, I witnessed the signing of a partnership that opens a real door for young creators across Kenya and Africa to a market of over a billion people, anchored on the MoU between Kenya and China,” said Kabogo on X.

The platform is expected to provide young creators with AI-powered tools, localization support and payment systems, allowing them to earn from their content while reaching audiences in China and other international markets.

Tazama Platform to Give Kenyan Creators New Ways to Monetize Content

According to Kabogo, the establishment of Tazama in Kenya and Tanzania will create a direct pathway for young digital creators to transform their creativity into income-generating opportunities.

The platform will use technology solutions from Volcano Engine, which provides cloud computing and AI services under ByteDance, to support creators with tools that can improve content production, audience engagement and digital distribution.

For many Kenyan creators who rely on platforms such as TikTok, YouTube and other social media networks, monetization remains a major challenge due to limited access to international payment systems, digital tools and wider markets.

Kabogo said the partnership will allow Kenyan creators to access China’s large digital market while also opening opportunities in other global markets.

“WAPI Group and Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s cloud and AI arm (the company behind TikTok), will base the creator platform Tazama here in Kenya, giving our young people the AI tools, localisation support and payment systems to earn from their talent and reach China and other global markets from home,” Kabogo stated.

Kenya to Become Hub for Digital Content and Cultural Exchange

In his statement, the ICT CS said the partnership will promote cultural exchange by creating opportunities for African stories, music and creative content to reach audiences in China.

He noted that China represents a major digital market with more than one billion people, providing Kenyan creators with a significant opportunity to showcase their work internationally.

The partnership is also expected to support digital tourism by helping promote Kenya’s landscapes, heritage and culture through online content. Creators will be able to use digital platforms to highlight destinations, traditions and experiences to a wider global audience.

Kabogo added that the initiative will support African language content, beginning with Swahili, allowing creators to share local stories while maintaining their cultural identity.

The move comes as governments and technology companies increasingly focus on the creator economy, where social media users, influencers, filmmakers, musicians and digital storytellers are turning online platforms into sources of income.

Kabogo said Kenya’s position as a gateway to a continental market of about 1.5 billion people makes it an ideal location for expanding digital opportunities among young people.

The ICT Ministry has continued to promote digital skills development, technology adoption and partnerships aimed at creating employment opportunities in the digital economy.

The CS confirmed that the government will continue to provide an enabling environment to ensure that more young people can benefit from emerging opportunities.

“The future of work for our youth is digital, and the Ministry will keep providing the enabling environment, partnerships and skills pathways to make sure the opportunity reaches as many young people as possible. To every young creator watching: the door is open. Walk through it,” added Kabogo.
