Motor vehicle owners are required to renew their annual motor vehicle road licence through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
The 2025 renewal process is fully digital and is conducted via the government’s eCitizen portal.
According to the NTSA, the move to online payments has been designed to streamline compliance, reduce congestion at physical offices, and ensure transparency in the management of road licence fees.
Accessing the Portal for Motor Vehicle License
To begin the process, motor vehicle owners must:
- Log in to the NTSA service portal (New) through eCitizen. Once logged in, they should navigate to the vehicle services section and select the option for Motor Vehicle Inspections.
- The system requires the entry of a national identification number together with the vehicle registration details.
This information allows the portal to retrieve the vehicle record and generate the renewal amount applicable.
Fee Assessment and Payment
The renewal fee is determined by the vehicle’s engine capacity and age. NTSA guidance notes that higher-capacity vehicles generally attract higher fees.
- Once the payable amount is displayed, motor vehicle owners are prompted to proceed with payment.
- Payment options available include M-Pesa mobile money transfer, debit or credit card transactions, mobile banking, or direct bank transfers.
- Upon completion, the system automatically generates a digital receipt and a renewal slip.
Proof of Compliance
The renewal slips act as proof of compliance and should be retained by motor vehicle owners. Law enforcement officers may request to see this document during routine traffic checks.
- Motor vehicle owners are advised to download and store the slip securely, both in print and electronically.
For older vehicles or those classified for commercial use, NTSA may require a roadworthiness inspection before the renewal is finalised.

Inspections are carried out at NTSA-approved facilities and linked to the renewal records.
Insurance and Deadlines
Motor vehicle owners are also reminded that a valid insurance policy is mandatory for the renewal process.
Without proof of active insurance, the licence renewal cannot be completed.
The Authority encourages vehicle owners to renew their licences before expiry dates to avoid penalties.
Late renewals may attract fines and, in some cases, necessitate fresh inspections.

In a statement, NTSA emphasised that the online renewal system is intended to provide convenience for motor vehicle owners across the country.
“Digital services ensure accountability, accessibility, and timely compliance with road licensing requirements,” the agency said.
The annual road licence remains a legal requirement for all motor vehicles operating in Kenya, and timely renewal is essential for compliance in 2025.
