Kenyans on social media were puzzled after spotting a police officer in full uniform collecting bus fare from passengers in Nairobi.
In a video that has since gone viral seen by The Kenya Times, the officer is captured inside an overcrowded bus moving from one seat to another, requesting fare from passengers, who pay in cash or via M-Pesa.
Following the video, Kenyans online reacted with shock, wondering how the officer could work part-time as a bus conductor while wearing his full police uniform.
Some mocked the officer for collecting bus fare in his full police uniform, questioning his professionalism and the appropriateness of his actions.
Mixed Reactions After Video of Police Collecting Fare
They felt it was improper for a police officer to take on such a role, suggesting that it undermined the dignity of the police force.
“How can someone in uniform work part-time? It’s actually a conflict of interest. This is why the bus is overcrowded, with some passengers standing, and he cannot enforce the law,” Awiza posted on X.
A user named Losh Tam wrote, “It is wrong to do a side hustle while wearing a police uniform. He should remove the uniform and wear civilian clothes instead.”

Others, however, supported his actions, praising him for bridging the gap between the police and the public.
They appreciated his efforts to interact with citizens in a relatable manner, viewing it as a positive step toward improving the police’s image and fostering better community relations.
“Very nice. He fits the slogan “utumishi kwa wote”(service to all). I think with that mentality cases of sexual harassment to ladies and carrying of excess passengers would be finished completely in the matatu industry,” Mac Colins said.
Wilfred Mosi another user posted, “But we should allow them Hussle too, if they go rogue like Kasarani case we criticize them, if they do a legit side hustle we criticize, give them a break.”

Afande Denno the Police Officer Spotted Collecting Fare
A quick search on his social media revealed that the officer, Afande Denno, is a TikTok user and a content creator who records and shares his daily activities on the platform and sometimes goes live while interacting with Kenyans.
He is not a part-time conductor, but a police officer known for engaging with the public to improve the police service’s tainted image.
The officer posted the video on his TikTok account on Friday, June 7, 2024, with a caption aiming to foster peace between the police and Kenyans.
“Police officers are human too. Let’s end this longstanding animosity between citizens and the police, as well as between the police and all community institutions. Attacking the police is like attacking the government,” he wrote.
“Wakadinali and all artists, let’s come together on this platform to discuss this issue and live in peace. Always, Officer Deeno.”
