Abdulkadir Mohamed Haji popularly known as Abdul Haji, is the current Senator for Garissa County in Kenya.
He was first elected in a 2021 by-election following the death of his father, Mohamed Yusuf Haji, who was a prominent Kenyan politician and former Minister of Defence.
Abdulkadir was endorsed unopposed for the position and has since been re-elected for a second term starting in 2022. He is a member of the Jubilee Party.
Abdulkadir Mohamed Haji is notably recognised for his heroic role during the 2013 Westgate Mall terrorist attack in Nairobi, where he helped rescue numerous hostages, including his brother Noordin Haji, currently Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions.
Educational Background of Abdul Haji
Abdul Haji completed his secondary education at Moi High School, earning his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1993.
He later pursued higher education at the University of Bradford, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Management Studies in 2000.
Furthering his academic credentials, he earned a Master of Business Administration (Global MBA) from United States International University in 2011.
Career Background
Before entering elective politics, Haji established a strong entrepreneurial and media presence.
He is the Managing Director of Radio Salaam, a media outlet focused on serving Kenya’s Muslim population.
Abdul Haji also founded Masala Communication, a Safaricom dealership network, and serves as a director at Colchester Investments Limited, a real estate and property management firm.
He sits on the Board of the Abu Huraira Group of Schools, reflecting his commitment to education.
Abdulkadir Mohamed Haji entered elective politics following the death of his father, Senator Yusuf Haji, and was declared Senator for Garissa County unopposed in April 2021, running on a Jubilee Party ticket.
He was officially sworn in later that year.
Haji successfully retained his seat in the August 2022 general elections, garnering a commanding lead in votes.
In his current tenure, he serves as a member on several Senate committees, including areas such as national security, environment and land, and the Shakahola tragedy investigation.
He also sits on the Speaker’s Panel. Previously, he served as Vice-Chair of the Committee on Energy and a member of the Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations
