Joyce Atieno Osogo, popularly known as Bensouda, is a Kenyan politician from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
She was elected to the National Assembly for Homabay Town in the 2022 general election, taking over from Gladys Wanga.
Bensouda is not her real name. It is a nickname that she got owing to her personality similarities with former ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.
She is one of the leading female Members of Parliament in the 13th Parliament and has led various initiatives to empower her constituents through education programmes.
In a ranking done by Timely Kenya, she was among the top three female legislators of the year.
She was recognised for her Mama County Back to School Programme, which targets girls who dropped out of school.
Joyce Bensouda’s educational background
Bensouda joined Nyabisawa High School in 1986, where he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in 1991.
Later, she joined Kamagambo Teachers Training College in 1992, and she qualified as a P1 teacher in 1995.
In 2004, Joyce Bensouda joined the University of Nairobi, where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts Education, which she obtained in 2008.
Additionally, in 2008, she enrolled for a Master of Arts in Project Planning and Management at the same university and, having qualified, she left in 2010.
Joyce Atieno attained a Doctor of Philosophy in Project Planning and Management in 2015.
Career Background
From 1995 to 2001, Joyce Atieno joined the Danida Organisation as a nursery assistant, then later she joined the Teachers Service Commission as a senior teacher up to 2012.
As a part-time lecturer at KCA University, she worked from 2010 to 2012, alongside her teaching career.
Bensouda has worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Spatial Planning at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology from 2016 to 2020.
She also served as a CEC in the Kisumu County government in 2020 after being appointed by Governor Anyang Nyong’o in a County Government reshuffle.
She served as the County Executive Committee Member for Roads, Public Works and Transport up to 2022.
While serving in Kisumu County, Bensouda’s political ambitions were ignited by Prof Nyong’o, and she got the urge to join elective politics.
