Artists Defy Boycott Calls to Entertain Ruto

Amid calls for a boycott by a section of Kenyans against artists performing on Jamhuri Day, spearheaded by President William Ruto, the celebrations on Thursday, December 12, featured notable performers.

The star-studded lineup included Jua Cali, Mejja, Esther Wahome, Daddy Owen, and Jaguar, who thrilled thousands of fans gathered to mark the country’s 61st independence anniversary.

Other artists who defied the odds and performed at the event were Kenyan rapper Dennis Kaggia DNA, Gidi Gidi and Maji Maji.

Celebrated genge artist Mejja brought the house down during Jamhuri Day celebrations with electrifying performances of his popular hits Double Tap, Karibu Kenya and Jana Kuliendaje.

Juacali entertained the guests present at Uhuru Gardens with his song Kwaheri where he featured Sana and Bidii Yangu.

Esther Wahome performed her Kuna Dawa song, while Kenyan legendary musician ,Mr Lenny performed his song, Leo.

Kenyan rapper DNA joined the lineup with his songs Banjuka Juu, Maswali ya Polisi, Twendelee Ama Tusiendelee, Swim Swim, Muziki Ni bomba and Chapa (Fimbo ya pili).

Kenyans Warns of Boycott

This follows warnings from Kenyans on social media platforms, criticizing artists for their willingness to entertain what was perceived as the “corrupt political class.”

“Are they truly comfortable associating with those who have been linked to serious crimes such as theft and murder?” an X user posed.

“If you find it appropriate, I would appreciate it if you could convey this sentiment so that Kenyans can critically reflect on the values we uphold.”

Social media user Francis Gaitho dared artists with the “guts” to perform at the event, warning that doing so could spell the end of their careers.

“The artists who dare perform tomorrow at Jamhuri Day celebrations; you’ve been warned. Even Kasmuel Mcoure concocted circumstantial rationalization to justify his misguided decision to join Raila Odinga,” Francis Gaitho posed.

“But we don’t really care. If you think your pursuit of “unga” begins where freedom, justice, equality and economic prosperity ends, you’re in for a rude shock. You will pay dearly to try to sanitize the William Ruto regime. Your career will die tomorrow.”

Alinur Mohammed opined, “The artists who have been invited to sing for Kasongo today in the Jamhuri event organized by Daddy Owen will have a rough time on the internet especially here at X.”
