Gengetone artist Shalkido, best known for the catchphrase “Shalkido mi huspin na mayeng,” has died after being declared brain dead.

The musician was involved in an accident on Sunday, October 5, after being involved in an accident that left him in critical condition.

Shalkido, who had earlier been reported to be in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, passed away on the evening of Monday, October 6, 2025.

The artist’s demise was announced by family members on TikTok. Shalkido’s cousin confirmed his death while standing beside his father, saying they had just received news from doctors that the singer had succumbed to his injuries.

“Hello, guys, it is a sad evening. We are here with Shalkido’s father, and we have just received a report from the doctor that Shalkido died at 6:30, just a few minutes ago. So, guys, let us come together and stand with this family. Everything will be okay,” the cousin said while speaking in the video alongside Shalkido’s father.

The news of Shalkido’s accident was first shared by media personality Oga Obinna, who revealed that the former Sailors Gang member had been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

“Shalkido is critical in the hospital. Apparently, he had an accident today early morning. Will update on what happened, where, how, and why. Na tuliwachana vizuri today morning. Keep him in your prayers kindly,” Obinna said.

He has internal bleeding in the brain, which has ruptured. His left leg is also broken. ‘They say the most important thing right now is the brain. They are waiting for it to stabilize as they await a neurosurgeon,” Obinna added, saying doctors had confirmed severe head injuries and a broken leg.”

Oga Obinna Reveals Gengetone Star Shalkido Involved in Accident

According to Obinna, Shalkido, real name Kelvin Mburu Kinyanjui, had made a brief appearance at an entertainment joint in Thika before heading back to Nairobi on his motorcycle.

“When we were leaving, we lost him at some point. We met at the merging road to Thika. He was on his bike. I fueled his bike, and we proceeded. This was around 4 a.m. We went until just past KU. He waved at us as he took an exit, and we proceeded with our journey,” Obinna recalled in a video shared online

This comes nearly a month after the Ni Tekenye hitmaker revealed that he was struggling financially and appealed for help.

The young artist shared that he had reached his breaking point as a father, explaining that he had tried several hustles but none had worked out.

He posted a photo of his modest living conditions, saying he would be grateful for a motorbike to start a boda boda business and support his family.

His plea touched many Kenyans, including comedian Eric Omondi, who used donations from fans under his Sisi Kwa Sisi initiative to buy Shalkido a new motorbike.

Eric later shared a video of himself unwrapping the motorbike and officially handing it over to the struggling singer.

Shalkido Opens Up on Struggles After Exiting Genge Tone Group

In an exclusive interview, Shalkido admitted that poor financial literacy during the peak of his fame was a major factor that contributed to his downfall.

While popular radio host Mwalimu Rachel secured the group well-paying gigs at the time, Sailors Gang assumed that money would keep flowing endlessly and did not plan for the future.

When the group eventually split, Shalkido was left struggling financially. He tried almost every hustle to support his young family, from riding boda bodas to working on construction jobs, but none of them worked out for him.

The musician recalled a tough moment when he told his wife to return to her mother’s place and decided to leave their house after constant conflicts with the caretaker.

“I just left and I only had KSh 80 with me. I boarded a matatu and decided that whichever town I alighted at, I would start a new life there. I won’t say which town it was, but when I got there, I looked for a job as a watchman,” he recounted.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t last because the employer accused me of trying to get close to his wife. He chased me away with the mattress and bedding you saw me with, and I decided enough was enough.”

The artist added that long before this incident, he had even attempted to end his life several times, once by drinking poison and another time by throwing himself onto a busy road from a footbridge.

Obinna not only helped him settle in a fully furnished house but also supported him in securing an ambassadorial deal.

During his show, Obinna personally gifted Shalkido essential household items. A brand-new sofa, a comfortable bed mattress, and a plush carpet were presented to the artist.
