Starehe Boys Centre, a renowned educational institution, has found itself embroiled in a controversy after reports surfaced online stating that President William Ruto was set to make an appearance during the school’s “Founders Day” event on Saturday, July 20.

This development has reignited the ongoing battle by Kenyan youth to keep politicians away from occupying pulpits by disrupting such events across the country.

An X user named Mwabili Mwagodi, a prominent figure in this movement, has been at the forefront of the efforts to deny politicians a platform in such settings.

In a strongly worded letter addressed to the principal of Starehe Boys Centre, Mwagodi expressed his disappointment and urged the school to “do the right thing” and reconsider the invitation extended to President Ruto.

Mwagodi in the letter highlighted the president’s alleged involvement in various criminal activities.

Details of Mwagodi’s Letter to the School

“I am ashamed that you have invited a Kenyan politician to grace your solemn occasion on the 20th of July 2024,” Mwagodi wrote.

Mwagodi’s letter underscores a common stance among Kenyan youth who are determined to prevent politicians from using such social events for political gain.

On his X account, the activist also issued a statement urging Kenyans to help him stop the event by emailing both the school and alumni.

“I have emailed the Principal of Starehe Boys Center. I need his direct contact though. This is not enough. I need all Kenyans to email this school. Especially alumni,” he said.

Kenyans React to the Starehe Boys Invitation to Ruto

Another prominent figure in the movement is activist Shad Khalif who led the charge, calling on old boys and alumni to speak up against President Ruto’s appearance at the event

Other Kenyans also weighed in on the conversation expressing varying opinions on the matter.

“I think in this fight for good governance we need to know when to strike and when to retreat. We are becoming petty now. We started well guys,” said George Kibet.

“I think the event should carry on as scheduled, but the old boys should boycott, stay away. Embarrass the Sugoi butcher, let him meet and speak to empty chairs. @Starehe_Boys please stand with Justice and Truth,” said Norah Kiereri on X.

CEO Amoit Company suggested that the school should select a different speaker, saying “As an Alumni of the Fraternity, they should select someone else. Someone whose character blends well with the values of the school”. 

Ruto on Harambees

On Sunday, July 14, President Ruto while speaking in AIPCA Pondo Parish in Nyandarua addressed the issue of banning government officials from participating in harambees (public fundraisers).

He acknowledged the pressure to restrict government officers from contributing to church donations and public fundraisers.

“Things have changed. It has been said that we reduce our speeches in churches, and I agree to allow the clergy to preach to us. There are people who have pushed us too much to stop harambees in church, so we are wondering how the churches will be built,” Ruto said.

However, he stated that the law he will be subjected to public participation and asked the public to decide the next step regarding it.

“The good thing is that the law will be brought back to you during public participation. So, you will decide what we do so that we have the best way forward to stop corruption in church but still contribute to building the church in a way that respects God,” he said.
