Bridgit Atieno, a 27-year-old lady, has made a decision to go back to school after dropping out 12 years ago.
In a statement, Atieno- who is a mother and a community worker in Nairobi’s Sinai slums, said she has enrolled at an adult school hoping to change her life.
Detailing her education journey, the mother of one said she started her secondary education at Jogoo Road Girls High School in 2011.
After her form one, she was transferred to Kubweye Mixed Secondary in Migori in 2012 where she was set to continue with her form two studies.
However, she was forced to drop out after only one term, noting that her parents were unable to raise school fees for herself and her siblings.
According to her revelation, she chose to drop out to allow her younger sibling to remain at school.
“First, I was in Jogoo Road Girls high school 2011 in Nairobi for my form one then later transferred to kubweye mixed secondary 2012 in Migori county for my form 2 which I didn’t finish. I went up to the beginning of term 2 and later dropped out,” she explained.

She would later return to Nairobi and started taking informal jobs.
However, opportunities in the capital, as she narrates, were scarce and the few available ones demanded a minimum requirement of a certificate.

The lack of a certificate to qualify for the jobs, she notes, left her disappointed from time to time.
On one occasion, Atieno had been nominated to be a women’s representative in Viwandani area of Makadara but was later dropped for lack of requisite papers.
“So that sort of made me make a decision to go back and finish my high school studies to avoid such situations again now that I have the chance,” she noted.

In her statement, Atieno said she has a dream of finishing her high school studies and eventually proceeding to the university to either pursue law or journalism.
Addressing critics of academic papers, the lady stressed the importance of having academic qualifications noting that not even connection could suffice the disadvantage of lacking papers.

She expressed her desire to turn her life and that of her son around, noting that the hardships she had experienced could only be solved by earning education.
Besides her family, Atieno also wants to make change in her community.
“I am back to an adult high school for the sake of a better tomorrow I’ll do it,” she wrote in her parting shot.
In Nairobi, several institutions have over the years offered adult education including the APIC College in Komarocks which offers Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) education.
