President Donald Trump appeared to limp as he walked down the steps of Air Force One on Saturday, April 11th. The 79-year-old president was arriving in Miami, Florida, for UFC 327. Observers noted swelling in his ankles during the descent.

Trump attended the Paulo Costa versus Azamat Murzakanov fight instead of joining direct peace talks on the Iran conflict. Vice President JD Vance handled those talks. Videos and photos from the arrival showed Trump moving slowly down the aircraft stairs while holding the railing.
Social media users quickly commented on his ankles. Journalist Aaron Rupar posted: “Check out how swollen Trump’s ankles are.” Another person wrote that the swelling was “a clear sign he is not well.”
Trump had traveled to the event after posting on Truth Social about a new US Navy blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. In the post, he said:
“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of blockading any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.”

White House addresses past diagnosis
The White House confirmed in 2025 that Trump has chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that causes swelling in the legs. Health Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated at the time that the diagnosis followed visible swelling in his legs.
Trump’s doctor, Sean Barbarella, released a written statement after a medical check. He said the president underwent a comprehensive examination. Barbarella reported no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease.
The statement added that Trump had normal cardiac structure and function, with no signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness.
Barbarella also addressed bruising on Trump’s hands. He said it came from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention plan. The doctor stated that Trump “remains in excellent health.”

Why this matters
The images of Trump’s swollen ankles and limping walk have renewed public discussion about his physical condition at age 79. This comes while he directs US military actions in the Middle East, including the announced naval blockade.
The condition chronic venous insufficiency is common in older adults and can worsen without treatment.
The White House has described it as benign, but the latest public appearance has again brought the topic into national view as Trump continues his duties as president.
