Several casualties have been reported following a tragic accident involving a bus and a lorry along the Thika Superhighway.
The accident which happened on the morning of Saturday, May 25, 2024, involved several vehicles including a Nairobi Technical Training Institute bus.
Preliminary reports indicated that the accident happened near the Muthaiga Police Station section of the busy Thika Road, with witnesses at the scene reporting casualties.
In photos and videos seen by The Kenya Times, the Institution bus was damaged on the front part indicating that those seating at the front could have been highly impacted by the crash.
Also, the bus and CJ’s company lorry could be seen stalled between the corresponding lanes of the highway as a crowd gathered around to catch a glimpse and help casualties. An ambulance was seen at the scene together with police officers.
Motorists plying the route reported the accident as being serious while warning that the crash had affected both lanes leading to a traffic snarl up.
“Please avoid the area if possible and expect significant delays. Emergency services are on the scene,” said Stephen Kamotho, a witness at the scene.
Eldoret-Nakuru Highway Matatu Accident
Earlier on Saturday morning, five people were confirmed dead following a tragic accident involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatu and a truck along the Nakuru – Eldoret Highway.
Nakuru County police boss Samuel Ndanyi confirmed the passing on of the five people in the crash that happened in Migaa area of Uasin Gishu County along the busy highway.
The police boss in a statement on May 25 said that the accident happened at around 3.30am, adding that he matatu was travelling from the Eldoret direction. He added that four women were among the dead whereas a man also lost his life.
At the same time, Ndanyi confirmed that eight people were rushed to Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital with serious injuries.
“Eight people are currently receiving treatment at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital. The bodies have been taken to Nakuru County mortuary, “said the police boss.
Photos seen by The Kenya Times showed the Eldoret Crossroad Sacco matatu severely defaced, a testament to the impact of the crash.
The accident comes just days after another crash claimed the lives of several people along the same highway.

Six people were also confirmed dead on May 20 following a fatal accident that happened at Hiriton area along the busy Nakuru – Eldoret Highway in Uasin Gishu County.
Matatu full of passengers collides with trailer
The crash which happened during the day involved a matatu and two trailers.
According to witnesses at the scene, the 14-seater matatu full of passengers operating under 3-NT Sacco and one of the trailers were headed to Eldoret.
On the other hand, the other trailer was heading to the opposite direction.
Reports indicated that the trailer that was headed to Nakuru lost control, in turn colliding with both the matatu and the oncoming other trailer.
The matatu driver was among the fatalities reported to have died on the spot, alongside the passengers who occupied the front seats.

These two crashes reported within a span of one week add to several road crashes to have been recorded in the year 2024 that have turned fatal.
NTSA Statistics
Data released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) attributed losing control as Kenya’s main cause of road crashes.
NTSA made the attribution while revealing that road crashes across the country have claimed 1554 lives since the year started.
According to NTSA these deaths occurred between January 1 to April 30, 2024, with pedestrians being ranked as the most vulnerable road users.
A total number 574 fatalities resulting from the accidents were identified as pedestrians, with motorcyclists following closely at 356 while 329 passengers died in the period under review.
On the other hand, at least 134 drivers have died in the first four months of 2024 while pillion passengers recorded 129 deaths.
According to NTSA, March was the deadliest recording 403 road fatalities followed by the month of April with 388 deaths.
