Chief Kadhi of Kenya, Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein, has passed away while undergoing treatment in the country’s coastal city of Mombasa.
According to lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi, the Chief Kadhi died on the evening of Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un… Chief Kadhi of Kenya Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein died last evening in Mombasa. May Allah reward his soul with Jannatul Firdaus,” said the lawyer.
Kenyans Eulogise Chief Kadhi Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein
Following his death, Kenyans have sent messages of condolence to his family.
Sheikh Jamaludin Osman, Imam of Jamia Mosque in Nairobi, said:
“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we will return. I am saddened to inform you of the passing of our Chief Kadhi, Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein, a short while ago in Mombasa. He will be buried in Mombasa after Asr (afternoon prayers). O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him peace, pardon him, honor his resting place, expand his grave, and cleanse him with water and ice.”
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir eulogized the Chief Kadhi as a man who served Kenyans with great dedication.
“Extremely saddened by the passing of the Chief Kadhi of Kenya, Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein. Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return. With the grace of the Almighty, he served the Kenyan Ummah faithfully and in many ways,” said the Governor.

On his part, Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale eulogized him as a great scholar and leader of the ummah, humble and soft spoken.
“He was a great scholar and leader of the ummah, humble and soft spoken, I miss a brother “O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and give him strength and pardon him. Be generous to him, and enlarge his entrance (to his abode), and wash him with water and snow and hail”,” Duale said.
About the Chief Kadhi of Kenya
Prior his death, Sheikh Athman Abdulhalim Hussein was the Chief Kadhi of Kenya, appointed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in July 2023, succeeding Sheikh Ahmed Muhdhar, who retired after 12 years of service.
His appointment was made after a JSC interview process, where he was selected from five shortlisted candidates (Sukyan Hassan Omar, Idris Nyamagosa Nyaboga, Kutwaa Mohamed Abdalla, and Omari Hassan Kinyua).

As Chief Kadhi, he was the highest authority in Kenya’s Kadhi’s Courts, overseeing the administration of Islamic law in matters of marriage, divorce, inheritance, and family issues for Muslims, as mandated by Article 170 of the Kenyan Constitution.
He Began his career as Kadhi 1 in Kwale. He served as Principal Kadhi in Mombasa and Isiolo.
He was later transferred to Nairobi as Senior Principal Kadhi, a position he held until his appointment as Chief Kadhi.
