The National Assembly has approved the nomination of former Chairperson of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Issack Hassan to head The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
In a statement, the National Assembly announced that it has approved Hassan’s nomination together with other people to be members of IPOA.
“The National Assembly has approved the following persons for appointment as Chairperson and as Members of the Board of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority,” the statement read.
Hassan’s nomination was approved along with other members, including Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, Dr. Micah Onyiniego Nyakego, Boniface Kipkemoi Samati, Dr. Annette Mudola Mbogoh, John Muchiri Nyaga, Kenwilliams Nyakomitah, and Jackline Lukalo Mwenesi.
Issack Hassan nomination approved by MPs to head IPOA
Issack’s appointment as Chairman of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), along with his fellow members, comes shortly after President William Ruto nominated them on November 12, alongside several other appointments.
The President’s statement read, “In that regard, it is notified that His Excellency the President has formally transmitted to Parliament the names of the candidates for these roles, as annotated below, for appointment to the respective offices as stated.”
Hassan served as the Chairperson of IEBC from November 2011 to October 6, 2016.

Issak is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with 30 years experience as a legal practitioner and consultant in various countries including Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Namibia, and Afghanistan.
Hassan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B) from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, and a Diploma in Contemporary Public Administration Management from Galilee International Management Institute, Israel.

Issack’s approval also comes at a time, when President Ruto has made several state appointments.
Recent appointments by President William Ruto
In a gazette notice dated November 22, the President appointed several former members of parliament to different state departments, where they will serve for three years.
The appointees include former Rarieda Member of Parliament (MP) Nicholas Gumbo and former Kesses MP Swarup Mishra.

Elsewhere, the President appointed former Chief of Defence Forces Robert Kibochi to head the Board of Directors of the Mwai Kibaki Referral Hospital.
