Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has responded to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over investigations of his close allies over demonstrations in June 2024.
In a statement, Gachagua has stated that the two Members of Parliament (MPs) under investigation, are James Gakuya and Benjamin Gathiru MejjaDonk.
He has defended them saying that they had nothing to do with the violent disruption of peaceful anti-tax protests in June and July.
Further, the Deputy President lamented that officers have been harassing his friends for the past two months.
“I am embarrassed that we are back to where we were. Harassment of my office staff and Members of Parliament perceived to be close to me, has been going on for the last two months.”
“I have learned of a scheme to prefer trumped-up charges against three members of my staff and the MPs Embakasi North James Gakuya and Embakasi Central Benjamin Gathiru MejjaDonk,” stated Gachagua.

Gachagua Speaks on Impeachment
At the same time, the DP has explained that the frustrations are a plot to ruin his name and eventually impeach him.
“This evil scheme is to associate them with violent demonstrations that took place in late June, in a futile attempt to soil my name and hopefully create grounds for the mooted impeachment proceedings against me,” he added.
Moreover, Gachagua has noted that the criminal justice system is being used by certain individuals to manage politics in the country, contrary to what he had embarked to work against.
However, he has said that Kenyans can read through the sideshows and know that he had nothing to do with the disruption of protests.
“Kenyans are intelligent people. They know what factors made Kenyans take to the streets. Kenyans also know what the real problems in Kenya are.
“They surely know Rigathi is not among them. Let our agencies remain professional, follow the rule of law, and keep off politics.”

DCI Recommendations on Charges
DCI has recommended serious charges against five people including Members of Parliament (MPs) for their alleged involvement in planning, mobilizing, and financing the youth-led anti-government protests.
The letter noted that efforts are made to obtain all financial data from Safaricom, the Financial Reporting Centre (FRC), and banks where the purported financial transactions were carried out.
“The two members of parliament were summoned on 31st July 2024 and their statements were recorded. However, they declined to hand over their mobile phones for forensic examination,” read part of the letter.
