The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has revealed the complainant who reported the slain Albert Ojwang for spreading misinformation against him.
While addressing the members of the Press Kanja stated that Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat raised a complaint that Lagat raised a complaint that several social media users were spreading false information about him.
“The reason why the late Albert Ojwang was arrested together with a few others is because there was a complaint that had been launched by the DIG about his name being tarnished,” said Kanja.
Kanja was responding to a journalist’s question about who the complainant was that led to Albert Ojwang’s arrest in Homa Bay County by DCI detectives.
The Inspector General of Police narrated that Ojwang was arrested for publishing false information and was later transported to Nairobi where he was questioned by offers from the DCI on Saturday June 7 2025. He was then booked at Central Police Station under OB Number 136/ 7/6/2025 at 2935 hrs .
IG Kanja Confirms Eliud Lagat Reported Albert Ojwang for Misinformation
According to the IG, Ojwang was found unconscious during a cell routine inspection and was immediately rushed to Mbagathi Hospital for treatment, as documented in OB Number 9/08/06/2025 at 01:39 hrs. Upon arrival at the hospital, the social media influencer was pronounced dead.

Additionally, Kanja narrated that after the circumstances surrounding Albert Ojwang’s death remained unclear his office notified Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) about the incident, and IPOA has immediately launched investigations into the matter.
IG Kanja’s press briefing comes hours after the National Police Service suspended officers who were on duty at the Central Police Station while Albert Ojwang was in custody.
IG Suspends Police Officers Stationed at Central Police Station
In a statement, IG explained that he arrived at the decision to ensure impartial investigations by the relevant authorities regarding the mysterious death of Albert Ojwang.
“The National Police Service (NPS) wishes to inform the public that, following the tragic death of Mr. Albert Ojwang while in police custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi, and to ensure a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Inspector General of the National Police Service has ordered the interdiction of the following officers with immediate effect,” read part of the statement.

Albert Omondi Ojwang, a teacher and social media influencer, died on June 8, 2025, under unclear circumstances while in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station.
He was arrested on June 7, 2025, in Homa Bay County by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for allegedly posting false or derogatory content on X, reportedly insulting a senior police officer. Ojwang was briefly detained at Mawego Police Station before being transported to Nairobi.
