Former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera has claimed that more than 100 goons attacked his hotel in Kisumu at around 5:00 a.m. on Wednesday, damaging property and injuring staff.
In a post shared on his Facebook account on March 11, Irungu Nyakera said the attackers tied up a female security guard during the incident.
“At 5:00 am today, over 100 goons attacked my hotel in Kisumu, damaging property and injuring our staff, including tying up the security lady,” he said.
Nyakera stated that he pursued the attackers as they fled and fired two warning shots in the air. He later contacted the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) requesting police backup.
“I called the OCS and asked for backup, but an hour later, when no backup was forthcoming, I sent him a message that I intend to shoot anyone stepping onto my property. I hope he shared the message in their security WhatsApp group,” he stated.
In photos shared by Nyakera and reviewed by The Kenya Times, an injured bleeding man and a woman, reported to be the hotel’s staff, were seen lying on the floor.
Further, the former PS shared a conversation with the OCS where he informed him of the attack.
“OCS. We have thieves at the hotel,” Nyakera’s message read.
The officer responded to the message saying, “Duty officer almost. They were far from collecting a dead body.”
Irungu Nyakera Cites Similar Incident
Nyakera also alleged that a similar incident occurred about three weeks earlier, when individuals he described as goons arrived at the premises, removed merchandise, and locked them out of the building.

The property is associated with the Lake Basin Development Authority, which he said is the landlord.
He said he took over the premises in 2019 when it was an unfinished shell and has since invested more than Ksh235 million in developing the property.
Irungu Nyakera added that he holds a 50-year lease for the premises according to court records.
Further, he stated that individuals involved in the attack chanted anti-Kikuyu slogans during the incident but maintained that he would continue operating the business as an investor.
“Sending goons here, chanting ‘hatutaki mkikuyu’, will not drive me away. I am an investor, but I am not stupid,” Nyakera said.
Court Orders Reinstatement of Fairways Hospitality in Kisumu Hotel Dispute
According to a court reinstatement shared by Irungu Nyakera, the Kenya Tribunal issued a mandatory order compelling the landlords of a Kisumu hotel to reinstate Fairways Hospitality in possession of its premises, pending a full hearing of the case.
The order, issued on 25th February 2026 by Hon. Joyce Osodo, covered all floors of the hotel under Land Reference Number 15239, measuring approximately 41,900 square feet from the ground floor to the sixth floor. The tribunal directed that the tenant be granted unconditional access to the space.

“A mandatory order is hereby issued compelling the landlords by itself or its agents, and/or its assigns to reinstate the tenant into possession of the suit premises and allow the tenant unconditional access into the suit premises known as all that space located on the hotel comprised in Land Reference Number 15239 (Kisumu) comprising by measurement approximately forty-one thousand and nine hundred square feet (41,900 sq. ft) situated on the ground floor, first floor, second floor, third floor, fourth floor, fifth floor and sixth floor (the suit premises) pending the hearing of the application interpartes,” read the reinstatement in part.
The landlords, their agents, or assigns were also restrained from distressing for rent, locking, breaking into, or removing the tenant’s goods and equipment from the premises while the matter is pending. The tribunal further instructed that any locks or security personnel be removed immediately and, in case of non-compliance, the tenant may break the locks themselves.
To ensure enforcement, the County Commander of Kisumu, the Officer Commanding Station at Obunga Police Station, and the DCIO Kisumu Division have been tasked with overseeing compliance.
The case, Fairways Hospitality Kisumu vs Lake Basin Development Authority and Charcon Properties Limited, is scheduled for an inter-partes hearing on 16th March 2026 before Hon. P. May. The applicant has also been directed to file an affidavit of service prior to the hearing.
