A planned Annual General Meeting (AGM) by the Lari Nyakinywa Women’s Group in Kiambu County has ended in a tense standoff between police officers and the group members.
The National Police Service (NPS) on Wednesday, January 29, pleaded with the women at Gilgil Junction in Nakuru County, to retreat.
According to NPS, the standoff started after the police intervened on security grounds following intelligence that a clash would occur during the meeting.
Consequently, the NPS cancelled the meeting and notified the members.
“Whereas the same meeting was initially cleared by Police, we later received intelligence that the current settlers on the land were going to clash with the group.
“The meeting was cancelled on security grounds, and notice for cancellation was issued to Lari Nyakinywa Chairman to notify the members,” stated NPS.

Women’s Group Insists on Holding the Meeting
However, the group insisted on continuing with the meeting as planned leading to an interception at Gilgil Junction by the police, before they could reach their intended destination.
“The intelligence we received yesterday revealed that the group had mobilized themselves to proceed with the meeting which prompted us to take necessary action to prevent them from travelling to Gilgil.
“The group however defied the police advice and they have been intercepted by police at Gilgil Junction. The Regional Police Commander Rift Valley is on the ground engaging with the Group at Gilgil Junction to address the standoff amicably,” added NPS.
The officers appealed to the women to comply with the Police advice and disperse peaceably from Gilgil.
Moreover, other relevant Government departments have been involved to help find a lasting solution to the land issue.

Dorcas Rigathi’s Meeting Disrupted
In a separate incident on January 18, Videos seen by The Kenya Times showed former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga disrupting a prayer meeting held at Kamukunji Grounds in Nyeri County, where Pastor Dorcas Rigathi was in attendance.
The youth could be heard chanting “Ndovu“, referring to his elephant slogan. Also, the footage showed some of the youths accompanying him occupying the dais forcing the preacher to cut off his speech as panicked congregants started scattering in fear.
Njenga later entered the tent area where Pastor Dorcas Rigathi was seated, prompting her to move to a different spot.
