President William Ruto has directed Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Justin Muturi to work with responsible ministries in implementing the Climate Works Mtaani Initiative.
Speaking on Monday, August 26, Ruto said the National Youth Service (NYS) will be in charge of the Mtaani Initiative cohort.
He explained that the initiative will allow the youth take part in managing the environment and help Kenya respond to the issue of climate change.
“I want to announce that the NYS will be supervising the cohort young people that shortly we will be recruiting under our climate works mtaani initiative that will bring more young people into the space of greening Kenya, managing our environmental sustainability and making sure that we respond to matters changes using climate action initiatives that we have in place,” Ruto said.
He ordered Muturi to work with Environment CS Aden Duale and his defence counterpart Soipan Tuya to take charge of the Climate Works Mtaani Initiative.
“I am instructing the minister responsible for NYS to work with the CS responsible for Environment, Housing and Defence for them to provide leadership under this initiative as we focus on growing 15 billion trees as our response to matters climate change,” Ruto said.
NYS Crucial in National Development
Ruto stated that the NYS remains indispensable to government’s efforts to enhance service delivery and national security.
He explained that his administration has upheld its commitment to recruit significant numbers of servicemen and women into the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and others ensured job placement for NYS graduates.

The President stated that additional initiatives have been undertaken to improve the terms of service under NYS and embrace digital operations within the Service.
“To improve on the numbers as I have directed that the next recruitment should have 20,000 recruits, have today approved the recruitment of additional 200 cadet officers into the NYS and 500 private officers to support in the exemplary work that is going on at the NYS,” Ruto announced.

Ruto Pledges to Support NYS
He maintained that the government would continue to support NYS as a critical driver of national youth empowerment and a reliable partner in national development initiatives.
For this reason, he revealed that the government will expand the facilities at the NYS to accommodate the recruits and staff.
“I have already instructed the ministry of housing to provide additional hostels to house 3,000 extra recruits at the NYS and to also develop housing for staff at the NYS as they do their service,” Ruto said.
