Motorists using the Thika Road Superhighway experienced traffic congestion as students from the Kenya Utalii College staged demonstrations over the reported death of a fellow student.
Videos seen by The Kenya Times show students protesting on Friday, May 30, 2025, on the usually busy highway. This severely disrupted traffic flow along the busy Thika Road.
The traffic congestion stretched from the KCA University area to Muthaiga. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes until the protests subside and normal traffic flow resumes.
A Kenya Utalii College student was found dead inside a campus hostel on Friday, after reportedly remaining unnoticed for several days.
Thika Road Traffic as Students Hold Protests
Students had raised alarms about the missing student, but their concerns were allegedly overlooked by college officials.
While the cause of death remains under investigation, students are calling on the college administration to act swiftly.
Police officers were deployed to control the situation, while authorities continue to investigate the incident.

Update on Nairobi – Mombasa Highway Traffic
Elsewhere, traffic along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway was cleared on Friday afternoon, bringing relief to motorist and travelers heading to Amboseli National Park.
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed on Friday May 30, 2025, that all main access routes including Kimana Gate, Iremito Gate, and Meshenani Gate through Namanga had been opened and were fully accessible.
“Thank you for your patience. We wish you safe travels and a wonderful safari experience!” read the statement, signalling an end to a gridlock that lasted more than 8 hours.

KWS Gives Alternative Routes
Earlier on Friday, traffic disruption was experienced along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway after a fatal accident involving three trailers that collided on a bridge, completely blocking the road.
Kenya Wildlife Service gave alternative routes to tourists who are set to visit Amboseli National Park. In a statement on Friday, May 30, KWS asked tourists to avoid delays by using the Meshanani Gate via the Kitengela–Namanga Road instead.
“To all our esteemed visitors heading to Amboseli National Park, please note that due to traffic congestion along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway, we recommend using the Meshanani Gate via Kitengela–Namanga Road as an alternative access route,” read part of the statement.
Further, KWS expressed gratitude to visitors for their understanding and cooperation as they worked to ensure a smooth and memorable safari experience.
