Carrefour has announced the permanent closure of one of its Nairobi branches, while fresh claims about another outlet have drawn attention to the retailer’s operations in the city.
The retailer has closed its Comet Mall branch in Nairobi, effective October 31, 2026, after notifying customers that the outlet would permanently cease operations.
In a notice to customers, Carrefour announced that the store would permanently close on October 31, thanking shoppers for their loyalty and support over the years.
“Dear Valued Customers, please be informed that this store will be permanently closed effective October 31, 2026,” the notice read.
The retailer also advised customers to visit its nearest Carrefour outlets, assuring them they would continue to receive the same products and services.
“We sincerely thank you for your loyalty, trust, and support throughout the years. It has been our pleasure to serve you,” the notice stated.
However, the retailer has not disclosed the reason behind the closure.
Carrefour Closure Raises Questions Among Customers
Closure reports have also emerged concerning Carrefour’s Southfield Mall branch in Embakasi, Nairobi.
Videos circulating in early November 2026 claimed that the outlet had closed or was experiencing reduced activity, with claims of empty shelves and limited operations.

One social media user, Ivy Muthe, claimed that the Southfield Mall branch had already closed, attributing the development to difficult economic conditions.
“Many Carrefour branches are already crumbling; the Southfield Mall branch has already closed amid tough economic times courtesy of the Broad-based government,” she said.
Some users linked the shutdown to the branch’s location and accessibility, arguing that competition from nearby supermarkets may have affected its performance.
Shutdown Linked to Location and Accessibility
Ann Nyakinyua disputed claims that Carrefour was shutting down, arguing that the Comet Mall outlet’s location was the main issue.

She pointed out that Naivas and Maguna had opened nearby and noted that Carrefour’s Sarit branch continued to attract customers.
“This is a matter of the wrong location, and they are not shutting down. Next to it are Naivas and Maguna, which opened recently. Carrefour is usually packed because they don’t play when it comes to variety. You should visit their Sarit branch.”
Another user, Enkamano, also attributed the closure to the mall’s poor location and limited accessibility.
However, Tom Randiki challenged criticism directed at Carrefour, arguing that supermarket closures should be viewed alongside the expansion of other retailers, including Naivas and Quickmart.
