Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has announced plans for a tree-planting challenge to plant one billion trees in Kenya within 24 hours. The proposed world-record attempt is scheduled for April 22, 2027.
Muthoni made the announcement in a Facebook video shared on November 1, 2026, alongside Kenyan content creator and amateur boxer Mbavu Destroyer and an Australian environmentalist.
The initiative is expected to coincide with World Earth Day and will also mark the launch of a nationwide tree-planting day.
According to the Australian environmentalist, he intended to plant more trees in a single day than any individual had planted before.
He added that the exercise would be part of efforts to launch a countrywide tree-planting day.
“Tomorrow, I am planning to plant more trees in a day than any human has ever planted. Right here in Kenya, because anything is possible in this country. The reason we are doing this is that it is the launch of a countrywide tree-planting day, and we are here with Truphena,” he said.

Muthoni disclosed the scale of the undertaking, saying the organizers were targeting one billion trees within 24 hours.
She expressed confidence in Kenya’s ability to host the challenge, citing the country’s association with climate and environmental justice.
“On April 22, 2027, it will be World Earth Day. We will plant the most trees humanity has ever planted, one billion trees in just 24 hours in Kenya. Kenya is the home of world records, especially those related to climate and environmental justice, so we are going to break this record,” Muthoni stated.
Truphena Muthoni’s Tree-Planting Record
The latest announcement follows other large-scale environmental initiatives Muthoni has pursued beyond her tree-hugging challenges.
In February 2026, she announced plans to plant 150,000 mangrove seedlings within one hour in Kwale County.
The proposed exercise aimed to raise awareness of ocean conservation and the protection of marine life, including turtles.
Volunteers, including members of the Kenya Scouts Association, were also present during the exercise.
In March 2026, she announced another environmental record attempt in Brazil, where she was expected to hug 1,172 trees within one hour while engaging with Indigenous communities.

Guinness World Record for 72-Hour Tree Hugging
Muthoni gained international recognition through her endurance-based environmental campaigns, and in February 2025, she hugged a tree for 48 hours at Michuki Memorial Park in Nairobi.
She later surpassed that achievement after completing a 72-hour tree-hugging challenge between December 8 and 11, 2025, in Nyeri County.
Guinness World Records officially recognized the 72-hour achievement on January 26, 2026, awarding her the title of the longest marathon tree hug.
Truphena became the record holder after surpassing previous achievements by other participants, including Ghana’s Frederick Boakye.
After setting the world record, President William Ruto appointed Truphena Muthoni as an ambassador for Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Growing Campaign on December 15, 2025.
She was also awarded a Head of State Commendation in recognition of her environmental conservation efforts.
The government initiative aims to grow 15 billion trees across Kenya by 2032.
