Forgetting your M-PESA PIN or getting locked out of your account can be frustrating, especially when you need to access your money urgently.

Whether you have forgotten your PIN, entered the wrong one too many times, or you just want to change it for security reasons, you don’t need to visit a shop or call customer care.

How to Reset Your M-PESA PIN
If you have forgotten your current M-PESA PIN or you just need to change it, you can reset it using USSD code 334#. However, you should have already set up your security questions to reset your PIN.
Steps to Reset Your M-PESA PIN:
- Dial *334#
- Select My Account
- Choose M-PESA PIN Manager
- Select M-PESA Forgot PIN
- Enter your ID/Passport number
- Answer the security questions (if set previously)
- Enter a new PIN and confirm it.
You will receive a confirmation SMS once the PIN reset is successful.
You have only 3 attempts to reset your PIN. If you exceed this, your account will be locked for 7 days. You can, however, seek further assistance from Safaricom customer care.
On the other hand, you cannot reset your PIN if you have done an M-PESA transaction within the last 24 hours or initiated a SIM replacement in the last 7 days before requesting to reset the PIN.
How to Unlock Your PIN
Entering the wrong M-PESA PIN 5 consecutive times will result in your M-PESA account getting locked.
However, Safaricom has provided an unlocking service for USSD *334#. Here is how to unlock it.
Steps to Unlock Your M-PESA PIN:
- Dial *334#
- Go to My Account
- Select M-PESA PIN Manager
- Choose M-PESA PIN Unlock
- Enter your ID/Passport number
You will receive a message confirming your PIN is now unlocked
You may also receive an SMS prompt guiding you to reset your PIN, if necessary.
On the M-PESA and My Safaricom Apps, you will be prompted to enter your ID number to unlock your account when it is locked.

How to Change Your M-PESA PIN
It is advisable to change your M-PESA PIN regularly, especially if you suspect it has been compromised. You can do this through the M-PESA App, USSD *334#, or SIM Toolkit.
Change PIN via M-PESA App:
- Log in to the app
- Tap your profile (top left)
- Select your personal account
- Choose Change PIN
- Enter and confirm your new PIN
Change PIN via USSD:
- Dial *334#
- Select My Account
- Choose Change M-PESA PIN
- Enter your current PIN
- Enter and confirm your new PIN
Change PIN via SIM Toolkit:
- Open your phone’s SIM Toolkit (Safaricom Menu)
- Tap M-PESA > My Account > Change M-PESA PIN
- Enter your current PIN
- Input and confirm your new PIN
