Intrigues Behind KRA Leadership Changes
There’s a change of guard at KRA, with Humphrey Wattanga exiting the taxman role he has held since 2023. Commissioner Lilian Nyawanda has since been appointed as the acting Commissioner-General of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
On April 8, the tax man announced the board changes, officially removing Wattanga from the board.
The authority stated that he will proceed on terminal leave and will not renew his contract. Sources close to Times Tower say that Wattanga was under pressure from Treasury, but he declined. His contract was due for expiry in August.
Commissioner Nyawanda, who was in charge of customs, will now act as the Authority’s Commissioner General pending the appointment of a substantive boss.
“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Board informs the public that it will not be renewing Mr. Humphrey Wattanga’s Contract of Service as Commissioner General. Consequently, and in accordance with his Contract of Service, he is proceeding on terminal leave effective immediately,” read part of the statement.
On the same day, just hours after his removal from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), President William Ruto nominated him as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Pretoria, South Africa.
When he was announced as the KRA boss in 2023, his CV caught the attention of many, who marveled at his stellar credentials. Let’s dive into his C.V:
