Kenya Reinsurance Corporation (Kenya Re) has suspended its Managing Director, Dr. Hillary Wachinga, for 21 days, effective September 3, 2025, pending an internal review.
In a press release, Company Secretary Charles Kariuki said the suspension is a precautionary measure while investigators probe the matters at hand.
This move follows a series of allegations against Wachinga, which have been documented in a confidential complaint submitted to multiple oversight bodies, including the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA).
Kenya Re believes that the suspension given to Hillary Wachinga is in the best interests of the Company and its stakeholders to allow for a thorough and impartial assessment.
“The Board has appointed Nicodemus Gekone, currently the General Manager Property & Investments, to serve as the Acting Managing Director during this period.”
The Board further asserted its full confidence in Gekone’s ability to provide steady leadership during this period.
Kenya Re also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the highest standards of corporate governance and to protecting the interests of all its shareholders and stakeholders.

Kariuki promised to provide further updates as appropriate so as to remain focused on executing their long-term strategy and assure their stakeholders that their foundations remain strong and their business operations continue uninterrupted.
Hillary Wachinga
The suspended MD is a seasoned executive with over 17 years of experience in risk management, compliance, and auditing, 16 of those at the management level.
Hillary Wachinga has worked across diverse regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and is credited with automating key internal functions at Kenya Re.

He also lectures part-time at Strathmore Business School and is known to be an avid golfer and poet.
