Musician and businesswoman Esther Akoth alias Akothee has urged Kenyans to stop hosting relatives.
In a post via her social media platforms on May 27, Akothee said the current generation struggles with mental health problems and cannot host or accommodate relatives.
“Let us all agree that in this generation, we are incapable of living with or accommodating relatives. We are all mentally unstable, including the children you want to impose on us,” Akothee stated.
She explained the negative consequences of inviting relatives into ones home especially for people residing in urban set ups.
As such, she advised those traveling to Nairobi from the rural homes to find work rather than being comfortable at their hosts houses.
“Let everyone come to Nairobi and hustle like we did; there are no comfort zones. They spend all day lounging on couches, eating leftovers, and consuming more than the homeowners,” the post reads in part.
Akothee also criticized relatives for overstepping boundaries, noting that some of them when given accommodation beat their children revealing personal secrets online for content creation.
“They even have the audacity to beat up our wives and children. They expose our secrets and turn our children into content for TikTok,” she said.

Moreover, she cautioned that some of these relatives could further damage the relationship of the host and extended family due to the spread of personal information.
Akothee advised parents to take responsibility for their children rather than imposing them on others.
“Please, parents, life is hard for us too. This child, your favorite child you are imposing on us, will break our family relationships for good. We might even choose not to come home because of what they have reported to you,” she said.
The Akothee safaris CEO further pointed her preference to support from a far rather than live with them.
“They are your children and remain your responsibility, not ours. Find them a house as they hustle, and we will support them from there, but not while they are inside our homes,” she said.
Lastly, she emphasized on how times were tough reiterating the fact that everyone is dealing with some form of mental health and needs breathing space.
“It is already challenging to live with a spouse; everyone is looking for mental space to breathe. These are tough moments that require tough decisions,” she said.

Akothee Felix
Akothee’s sentiments follows an incident involving Felix, a 22-year-old man she was supporting, whose mother reached out for help.
Felix got arrested on allegations of defiling a minor.
At the time Akothee pleaded with Kenyans to give her space citing her own mental health struggles
Instead, she requested anyone who was willing to help Felix’s mother to reach out directly to her.
