Eric Obuya, popularly known in the online creators’ space as MC Exodus, took the content creation space by storm after his videos went viral on TikTok.

His relatable and humorous skits mirroring the events taking place in the society today have caught the attention of many Kenyans. On TikTok, his account currently has a following of 1 million users and over 13.5 million likes.

So far, Obuya has starred in collaborations with notable figures in the digital space, including Willis Raburu, Mluo and Vioja Mahakamani veteran actress Mama Kayai.

MC Exodus’s leap into city life

Speaking in an interview on Radio 47, Obuya recalled his first ever encounter with popular presenter Alex Mwakideu in 2020 when he pleaded for support.

At the time, Obuya had an interest in a journalism career.

“You were the first person to inspire me, and today’s success is part of that fruit,” he recalled.

“Back in 2020, during the COVID period, I told you I had a talent for broadcasting. You told me I needed to have something to present first, and you also stood up for me.”

The TikTok star moved to Nairobi as a young man, hoping to pursue a career in journalism. However, life took a tough turn forcing him to work as a house help, a job he lost shortly after.

Life inside the Winner’s Chapel toilets

With the odds stacked against him, MC Exodus turned to the church for refuge not just to hold on to his dream of becoming a broadcaster, but also to find shelter.

He ended up sleeping in one of the most unlikely places: the toilets at Winner’s Chapel in South B. Homeless and struggling, he quietly battled through this difficult season.

But eventually, he was discovered and asked to leave.

Despite the challenges, MC Exodus remained an active member of the church’s youth programs during the day.

His perseverance paid off as he finally brought his dream of working in the media to life. The young MC Exodus would later reach out to the church’s hierarchy to formally request authorization to sleep within its premises.

“I called the pastor and explained my situation,” he said.

“He knew me and assured me I wouldn’t be disturbed.”

He was later moved to a safer spot within the washrooms, where he could lock the door and rest without fear of harm.

MC Exodus’ signature comedy style

His ability to turn simple misunderstandings into comedic skits has made him stand out, creating memorable moments that resonate with fans and cement his reputation as a master of situational comedy. His consistency has seen him register fast growth in the Kenyan comedy scene.

Today, MC Exodus’ TikTok account has over 1 million followers, making him one of the most followed Kenyans on the video-sharing platform. Some of his skits, including collaborations with other creators, have garnered over 1 million views as well.
