Murang’a High School is a national boys’ secondary school located in Murang’a County. The learning institution is a Catholic-sponsored government school.
It was started in 1964 as a mere day school with only 35 learners. The late Bishop Caesar Gatimu was the pioneer school head.
However, in 1996, the late Gatimu called on the national government to take over the school’s operations.
Since then, Murang’a High School has developed into a boarding school, playing host to over 1,200 boys.
Owing to its growth both physically and academically, the school was elevated to national school status in 2014.
Over 400 students are admitted to Murang’a High School based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
Murang’a High School Performance
Until 2023, admissions at the institution were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.
However, this was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.
Murang’a High School has, over the years, consistently upheld a strong academic record and remarkable achievements in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Robinson Wanjala, a former student at the school, beat all odds to emerge as the top candidate (Kenya One) in the KCSE examination class of 2020.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 436 candidates, with more than 96% achieving the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.

School Fees
The government had earlier set a directive specifying the maximum yearly school fees that parents are expected to pay.
As part of the Ministry of Education’s 2020 guidelines, Kenya’s 103 national schools were divided into four clusters.
Murang’a High School was categorized under Cluster One (I), which places the official annual fee limit at around Ksh75,798 per student.
