Chuka University, located in Tharaka-Nithi County, was established in 2007 through Legal Notice No. 161 initially as Chuka University College, a Constituent College of Egerton University.

The university’s origins date back to 2004 when Egerton University proposed expanding into Eastern Kenya.

A technical committee, chaired by Prof. Erastus Njoka, identified Chuka as the ideal location due to its central position.

The campus officially opened in August 2005 as the Egerton University Eastern Campus College. On January 8, 2013, Chuka University was granted full university status with a charter issued by President Mwai Kibaki.

The university’s foundation is also tied to a 1951 prophecy by local seer Jerusha Kanyua, who envisioned an academic mountain rising in Ndagani and encouraged the youth to pursue education, using the pen as a spear and the book as a shield.

Chuka University operates multiple campuses, with the main campus located in Ndagani, Chuka. Other campuses include Nairobi Campus, Embu Campus, Chogoria Campus, and Igembe Campus.

Over the years, the university has produced renowned alumni, such as Lawrence Kitema, a media personality, blogger, and corporate communications officer, and Robert Masai, a reporter with Citizen TV.

Chuka University Faculties and Academic Programs

The university is organized into nine faculties offering a wide range of programs across various disciplines. These include the Faculty of Agriculture, Business Studies, Education, Environmental Studies and Resource Development, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Law, and the School of Nursing and Public Health.

Under the School of Nursing and Public Health, the university offers programs such as Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Basic), Health Records and Information Management, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Public Health.

In the Faculty of Science and Technology, students can pursue degrees in Applied Computer Science, Computer Science, Business Information Technology, Actuarial Science, Biochemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, and Microbiology and Biotechnology.

The Faculty of Engineering offers degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering.

Within the Faculty of Business Studies, students can enroll in programs like Bachelor of Commerce (specializing in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, and Procurement), Entrepreneurship and Technology Management, Procurement and Logistics Management, and Accounting and Finance.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences covers programs such as Economics, Sociology, Criminology, Journalism, Communication, Philosophy, Project Planning and Management, and Psychology.

The School of Law offers the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree.

Beyond undergraduate programs, Chuka University offers diploma and certificate courses in areas such as Business Management, Accounting, Procurement, Computer Science, Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Architecture), Nursing, Public Health, Nutrition, Education, and Hospitality.

Certificate programs include options in Business Management, IT, Animal Health, Hospitality, Environmental Studies, and Community Development and Social Work.

For postgraduate studies, the university provides Master’s degrees (MSc, MA, MBA, MEd) in various fields, and PhD programs including Accounting, Educational Management, Finance, Tourism Management, and Pure Mathematics.

In terms of financing, the university follows a fee structure for government-sponsored students placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

Fees for Different Courses

The Kenya Times reviewed the fee structure on the university’s website and established that the fee structure of the university ranges from 122,400  to 336,600 for different academic programs.
