Chuka University, located in Tharaka-Nithi County, was established in 2007 through Legal Notice No. 161 initially as Chuka University College, a Constituent College of Egerton University.
The university’s origins date back to 2004 when Egerton University proposed expanding into Eastern Kenya.

A technical committee, chaired by Prof. Erastus Njoka, identified Chuka as the ideal location due to its central position.
The campus officially opened in August 2005 as the Egerton University Eastern Campus College. On January 8, 2013, Chuka University was granted full university status with a charter issued by President Mwai Kibaki.

The university’s foundation is also tied to a 1951 prophecy by local seer Jerusha Kanyua, who envisioned an academic mountain rising in Ndagani and encouraged the youth to pursue education, using the pen as a spear and the book as a shield.
Chuka University operates multiple campuses, with the main campus located in Ndagani, Chuka. Other campuses include Nairobi Campus, Embu Campus, Chogoria Campus, and Igembe Campus.
