Kyondoni Girls’ High School is a public, girls’ boarding secondary school located in Kyondoni Village, Kitui-West sub-county, Kitui County.

The school was founded in 1978 as a Harambee school by members of the community under the sponsorship of the Africa Inland Church (A.I.C).

Kyondoni offers academic programs and a vibrant student life, including participation in sports, music, and creative arts, as well as clubs and leadership opportunities.

The school is preparing for the transition to Kenya’s new Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum, welcoming its first batch of Grade 10 learners in January 2026.

History of Kyondoni Girls

Kyondoni Girls’ High School is now a public extra county girls’ boarding secondary school with a rich heritage spanning over 42 years.
The school was founded in 1978 as a Harambee school by members of the community under the sponsorship of the Africa Inland Church (A.I.C).

Kyondoni Girls’ has grown over the years to a five-stream school in form one and two and a four-stream school in form three and four, with a population of about 920 students possessing sufficient basic facilities necessary for learning.

It provides quality, holistic education and nurtures students’ discipline, character, leadership, and spiritual principles, while instilling values.

Through this, the school has been able to take a good number of students to universities, many to colleges, and has produced individuals who serve in various positions in Kenya, as well as self-reliant, integrity-driven women.

Kyondoni Girls’ High School is currently led by Senior Principal, Mrs Aphia Somba, and by Mrs Judith Kimeu as the Deputy Principal (Administration) and by Mrs. N. Micah as the Acting Deputy Principal (Academics).

Additionally, the school has a professional staff of 44 teachers dedicated to helping students discover their full potential, along with a support staff of 23.

As of January 2026, Kyondoni Girls officially began admitting its first batch of Grade 10 learners under the new Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum, offering pathways in STEM and Social Sciences.

While Senior Principal Mrs. Aphia Somba continues to lead the school, the school recently mourned the passing of Deputy Principal for academics, Mrs. Stella Kyalo, in late 2025.

Performance and Enrollment

Kyondoni Girls’ High School has consistently maintained a strong academic record over the years.

Its mean score improved from 5.46 (C-) in 2005 to consistently maintaining C+ and above averages in more recent years.

In 2024, the school achieved an impressive mean score of 7.11, with 242 candidates sitting for the exams, placing Kyondoni Girls among the top-ranking schools in Kitui County.

This reflects the institution’s commitment to quality education and the hard work of both students and staff.

Elsewhere, in September 2025, the school reached a major milestone by qualifying for the National Science Congress for the first time, highlighting its growing strength in STEM subjects.

The school enrolls approximately 920 students in its boarding program.
