Loreto Convent Msongari School is a prestigious Catholic institution located in Lavington, Nairobi County. The school has kindergarten, primary, and secondary sections providing both day and optional boarding facilities for girls.
Msongari’s history stretches back more than a century. In 1921, the Loreto pioneers—Mother Francis Borgia, who introduced Loreto education to Kenya, and Mother Raphael Gordon—established Msongari.
The original school building still stands today and houses two offices, two parlours (now the Loreto Education Secretary’s Office), and two classrooms. These are among the oldest stone buildings constructed in the Kenyan highlands.
Loreto Convent Msongari School history
On November 11, 1921, the first cohort of 17 pupils was admitted. The first arrival was Eva Blowers, dressed in a navy tunic and white blouse—an outfit that became the foundation of the Msongari uniform. The students later selected red for the blazer and jumper, introducing the iconic red associated with Loreto Schools in Kenya.

As the school grew, new facilities were added. In 1929, the tennis courts and the concert hall—Kenya’s first school hall—were constructed. In 1936, a second storey was added to the quadrangle, designed by Mother Gordon, who was then the superior of Msongari.
The years that followed saw continuous expansion in infrastructure and enrolment, a trend that was altered by the onset of World War II.
Today, Loreto offers IGCSE, 8-4-4, and Competence-Based Education (CBE) curricula, aligning with the ongoing national curriculum reforms.
Under the 8-4-4 system, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is gradually being phased out. As of 2026, only the present form 3 and form 4 classes continue under the system.
By 2027, KCSE will be fully retired. The CBE system will produce its first Grade 12 graduates in 2028. This transition affects all Kenyan schools, including Loreto Convent Msongari.
School fees
Admissions to Loreto Convent Msongari secondary division take place at the beginning of each term, subject to available vacancies.
Although the school’s full and current fee structure is not publicly accessible, new applicants are required to pay a non-refundable interview fee of at least Ksh2,000 before sitting for the entrance assessments.

In addition, prospective students must complete a written interview, which includes tests in English, Mathematics, and Kiswahili. Candidates must average 60 percent to be considered for placement.
Once a student successfully passes the interview, parents proceed to the registration stage, which involves paying a non-refundable registration fee that the school administration periodically reviews.
After registration documents are completed and processed, the school issues the official fee structure directly to the parent or guardian. As part of the annual charges, the school includes an accident insurance policy costing KSh 1,500, which covers students throughout the year.
