The family of Mombasa entrepreneur Roselyn Ashanti Mwende, popularly known as Chunna, has shared accounts of her condition nine months after she was reportedly poisoned during her 32nd birthday celebrations.
Speaking on Thursday, November 5, 2026, her mother, Patricia Mala, broke down as she described the level of care Roselyn now needs, saying her daughter can no longer do even basic tasks without assistance.
Patricia said Roselyn cannot speak or attend to her personal needs, leaving her to provide all the care her daughter requires.
“When she was at the party, she collapsed. After they laid her on the table, she did not speak, and she has not spoken since.
Even when she is lying down like this, she cannot speak. She cannot do anything. I am the one who does everything for her because there is nothing she can do for herself,” Patricia said.
Roselyn Ashanti’s Family Speaks Out Nine Months After Birthday Celebration
Roselyn Ashanti’s brother, Fabian Mala, questioned why she was the only person from the birthday gathering who ended up in such a condition, even though several people attended the celebration.
“When there were so many people at the party, why is Chunna the only one in this condition? Could it have been something you ate or drank? Why is she the only one affected, and why did it happen on her birthday?” Fabian asked.
The Family is appealing for help as the rising cost of treatment has placed a financial strain on them, making it increasingly difficult to meet her medical needs.
Family friend Fridah Muya appealed to well-wishers to contribute towards Roselyn’s treatment, noting that the family was struggling to keep up with the daily medical expenses.

Details of the Incident
On February 14, 2026, Roselyn Mwende invited friends to celebrate her 32nd birthday in Mombasa.
During the party, Roselyn reportedly collapsed after allegedly consuming a poisoned substance. She was taken for medical attention and spent several months receiving intensive care.
The incident reportedly resulted in an estimated 50 per cent brain damage, leaving her unable to perform basic activities such as walking, speaking, seeing and feeding herself.
Police launched investigations after the incident was reported at Bamburi Police Station. However, no arrests have been announced, as DCI detectives continue working to establish what happened.
According to the doctor attending to Roselyn, her symptoms could be consistent with exposure to toxic substances such as lead or zinc.

The incident sparked speculation on social media, with some Kenyans suggesting that Roselyn may have been deliberately poisoned by acquaintances who were allegedly jealous of her success as a young entrepreneur who owned and managed several rental properties.
However, a different account emerged after a video circulated online featuring an individual who claimed to have been Roselyn’s close friend for more than a decade.
The individual alleged that Roselyn had struggled with substance use and suggested that her collapse could have been caused by a drug overdose.
Her family, meanwhile, raised concerns over the claims circulating on social media and urged Kenyans to avoid spreading misleading information about the circumstances surrounding her condition.
