The family of 29-year-old Mercy Kanini Mutiso has narrated what happened after she delivered five babies prematurely at Thika Level 5 Hospital, before four of the newborns died following their transfer to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Addressing the media on September 15, Mercy Kanini’s sister, Catherine Mutiso, said doctors had initially identified four babies, but a fifth was discovered during delivery.

“She was initially expectant, and the doctors had said there were four babies. However, during delivery, they discovered that there were five. The babies later developed complications,” Mutiso said.

Mutiso said three ambulances transferred the newborns from Thika Level 5 Hospital to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

How the Babies Were Transferred to KNH

She said the first ambulance carried two babies and their mother, while another transported one baby from a different family. The remaining two babies were transported in an ambulance accompanied by their father.

Mutiso raised concerns about the level of care the premature babies received during the transfer, saying the family was informed that the babies were placed in incubators or the nursery and were given jackets.

At Kenyatta National Hospital, two of the four girls died within two hours of arrival, while the other two died two days later.

KNH Clinical Director Joel Lesan said the five babies were born prematurely at 25 weeks and arrived at the hospital as referrals.

“The patient had a premature delivery at 25 weeks and delivered five preterm babies alive — four females and one male. Two females died within two hours of arrival, while the other two females died two days later due to premature lungs. The last male is very sick, and his premature organs are not doing well,” Lesan said.

Mercy Kanini Speaks After Delivery

Mercy Kanini, a mother of two, delivered the quintuplets on Sunday, September 13, at 25 weeks.

On her part, Kanini said she delivered the first baby shortly after arriving at the hospital, prompting nurses to prepare her for a Caesarean section.

However, the procedure was later called off after doctors examined her and determined that she could deliver the remaining babies normally.

She said she was delighted when she learnt that she had delivered five babies and was not afraid during the delivery, praising the doctors and nurses for the care she received.

Kanini said the newborns were placed in nurseries and were being attended to by medical staff.

“After some time, I don’t know what happened; they said I could deliver normally. I was very happy on learning that I had delivered five babies. My babies were put in nurseries and attended to well,” she said.

Her husband, Evans Nyamhanga, described the arrival of the five babies as a miracle and said the family had initially expected four babies.

He appealed for financial support to help the family meet the costs and demands associated with caring for the newborns.
