Winnie Odinga, the daughter of the late Raila Odinga, has visited the gravesite of her father for the first time since his burial in Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo in October 2025, nearly a year later.
In a public notice dated September 12, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament said she went to check on the ongoing construction of a mausoleum at Raila’s burial site.
According to Winnie, visiting her father’s grave has been difficult since her loss, and she has been building her life after Raila’s death.
“Took me a while to get here. My first time visiting Dad’s grave. I thought I was coming to check on the construction. Turns out some things are still under construction in all of us. Pole pole. We keep building. We keep going,” Winnie Odinga stated.

Winnie Odinga on Returning to Bondo.
The visit comes weeks after Winnie disclosed that she had not returned to Bondo since Raila’s funeral.
In an August interview, when asked whether she had gone back to the family home, she confirmed that since the burial, she had not visited Bondo.
“I personally have not returned. No. It is almost one year. Yeah, I will. Maybe this year,” she said.
According to Winnie, the family was preparing for a commemoration in Bondo that would include traditional and religious activities.
At the time, Winnie also explained the activities planned to mark the first anniversary of Raila’s death; the anniversary will focus on celebrating Raila’s life, according to Winnie.

Plans to Document Winnie’s Journey with Raila
Raila himself had earlier documented parts of his life and political career in his autobiography, Flame of Freedom, covering his childhood, political activism and role in Kenya’s struggle for democracy.
Winnie has said her account would draw from her own experiences and memories of growing up and living alongside her father.
Winnie noted that she intends to write about her journey with Raila, including different periods they experienced together, to add a personal account to the public record of Raila’s political life.
Raila died in India at the age of 80. His death led to several days of national mourning, followed by a State funeral attended by President William Ruto, foreign leaders, political figures, and thousands of Kenyans.
He was buried at Kang’o ka Jaramogi on October 19, 2025.
