Moi University has directed students living in specific off-campus accommodation to seek alternative housing immediately after a public health inspection report.
In an internal memo dated October 28, 2026, the Office of the Dean of Students asked all non-resident students residing at Edinburgh Plaza in Talai Centre to find alternative accommodation.
The directive referenced a statutory notice, REF NO: UGC/PH/SNI/10/26, and a public health inspection report, REF NO: MU/HS/PH/HS/010, concerning the premises.
“The University has mandate to advice students when such reports come to their knowledge. Students’ health, security and safety are critical,” the memo stated.

“Therefore, all students residing in Edinburgh Plaza are requested to seek alternative accommodation with immediate effect,” the memo added.
The Acting Dean of Students, Dr Alice Muta, signed the memo, and it was copied to the Vice Chancellor; the Deputy Vice Chancellors in charge of Administration, Research, Extension and Student Affairs; and Academic, Planning and Student Affairs.
The Chief Security Officer and Public Health Officer were also copied in the communication.
However, the memo did not detail the specific findings of the public health inspection report or state whether the premises had been ordered closed.

University Plans 1,260 Student Housing Units
The university has also moved to expand student accommodation at its Annex Campus, where students have relied on private housing because on-campus options are limited.
On January 28, 2026, Moi University handed over a site for the first phase of an affordable student housing project expected to deliver 1,260 housing units exclusively for students.
According to a university statement published on January 29, the project was designed to improve the safety and affordability of student accommodation while providing housing within the campus.
Speaking during the site handover ceremony, Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Kiplagat Kotut said the project reflected the university’s commitment to addressing students’ needs.
Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, Planning and Strategy Professor Loice Maru said the decision to begin with student housing was deliberate and aligned with the institution’s long-term development plans.
The project is being implemented in partnership with the State Department for Housing and Urban Development under the national government’s Affordable Housing agenda.
The university said subsequent phases would include staff housing at the Annex and Main campuses.
