Kenyans seeking to travel to the United States for urgent reasons may request an earlier visa interview date if they meet the conditions set by the US Department of State.
The option allows nonimmigrant visa applicants facing emergencies such as a medical crisis, a death in the family, or an approaching school start date to request an earlier appointment instead of waiting for the next available regular interview.
According to the US Department of State, applicants facing urgent and unexpected circumstances, such as a medical emergency, funeral, or impending school start date, may be eligible to request an earlier visa interview appointment at a US embassy or consulate.
“Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date,” the department states.
The department says the process varies depending on the embassy or consulate where an applicant intends to attend the interview. Applicants are therefore advised to check the local instructions before submitting a request.

Who Qualifies for an Expedited US Visa Interview?
The US Department of State identifies urgent and unforeseen circumstances, including medical emergencies, funerals and school start dates, as reasons that may qualify an applicant for an earlier interview.
Applicants travelling for emergency medical treatment may be required to provide medical documents explaining their circumstances and the need to travel.
Those seeking to attend a funeral may need to provide documents confirming the death and their relationship to the deceased, while students may be required to show evidence of their school admission and reporting date.
The US Embassy in Accra, Ghana, also listed urgent, unanticipated business travel among the circumstances that may qualify for an expedited appointment in a notice issued on November 6.
However, applicants should understand that meeting one of the listed conditions does not automatically guarantee an earlier interview. Each request is considered individually, and applicants must provide evidence to support their circumstances.

How to Apply for an Earlier US Visa Interview
The US Department of State requires applicants to complete the regular visa application process before requesting an expedited interview.
“You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment,” says the department.
After booking the regular interview, applicants should follow the instructions provided by the embassy or consulate handling their application to submit the emergency request.
The process outlined on the US visa appointment service for Ghana requires applicants to log into their account, open the appointment details and select the option to create an emergency request.
They must then explain the emergency, provide their intended travel date, and upload supporting documents.
If the request is approved, the applicant receives an email notification and can select an earlier interview date through the appointment system.
